Alex and Jonesy drop Rory off for his first day at his new school. As Alex approaches the school two shots are fired near him. A third shot is fired. No one is hurt and Alex manages to get a look at the suspects car. The children are sent home, so Alex takes Rory back to the station. The investigation begins into who the shooter may be, and who he was shooting at.
Jonesy: "Alex was in uniform and he was getting out of a marked car."
Matt: "Pig shooters?"
Amy: "Not quite the way I would have put it."

A theft from the local electronics store sees Tom meet former friend and Sergeant, Ian Goss(Gossy). Tom discovers that the thief is a former friend from church, Bob Thorn, and tries to understand why he was stealing but Bob makes no attempt to deny it. After Tom searches Bob's house he meets Tilly, Bob's daughter who is dying from leukemia. Tilly reaches out to Tom asking him to talk to her Dad, she knows she is dying but her Dad is in denial and won't talk about it.

After investigating, they discover the shooter is the father of a man who they charged and jailed years ago, he killed himself in prison and the father wants revenge.

Meanwhile, Tom appears to be in pain and not well. Despite Amy's efforts to acknowledge this, Tom won't hear it.

Alex is struggling to connect with Rory as a father. When Rory doesn't turn up at school it is thought he has been kidnapped. Alex takes charge and is desperate to find his son. Rory turns up unharmed, he had been at home because he was scared after the shooting. Rory and a relieved Alex embrace and we see Alex's concern and love for Rory come through.

After discovering it was Tom's birthday, Amy gives Tom a bottle of whiskey and wishes him a happy birthday.
Amy: "You should see a doctor."
Tom: "There is nothing a doctor can do to help me!"
Amy: "Sorry for the intrusion."
As Amy storms out, Tom invites her to "join me" for a drink. We see Tom finally opening up and Amy's efforts being rewarded.
