After the unusually disappointing 'Ripples on the Pond' previously, I was pleased to see that 'Blue Heelers' returned to it's usual high form of the period with 'Protected Species'.

Within the first few minutes, it was obvious that the young, cocky Daryl Watson who takes a room at the Imperial is the offender. They make no attempt to hide it. For a moment I was kinda like "...Is this it?". But then a much wider plot opens out.

This is a very good Tom-based episode, as he struggles to find a way to book Watson - and to maintain his pride, his promise to the man's daughter Maureen that he'll nab him.

My one only real problem with this episode is the way over-convenient conclusion. Daryl returns to the scene of the robbery, finally giving Tom who just happens to be there helping Maureen the opportunity to arrest him. Quite why Daryl chose to do this in the first place is never obvious; maybe he assumed that the place would be empty and returned to see what else he could take? But surely he would have seen the cars outside and the activity? It just seems too convenient for my liking.

The only other point I feel with the episode is that maybe it could have done with a separate b-plot, to break the main story up a bit.

But all-in-all, 'Protected Species' is a decent BH episode. But I'm not sure how to rate this one I'm torn between 9.0 and 9.5 (both very respectable scores). Alas, gone are the days of TV.com where you could give something say, a 9.3. ...I really like this episode, but with the convenient conclusion mentioned above, I think I'll settle on a 9.0 for this one. Still good though.moreless
