'Blue Heelers' was really on a roll at about this point, so it was with surprise that I found 'Ripples on the Pond' an unusually weak, dull instalment.
Ordinarily I love things with an Oriental connection, and I love Sky Tse puts in a wonderful guest performance as the kindly, forgiving Mr. Chen, but other than that, I found the whole plot to be flat, with a routine by-the-numbers investigation and little flair to perk up the interest.
From the off, it was obvious that Mr. Chen's daughter Lucy, and her lover and kitchen worker Ben, were somehow involved in the trouble, and as such, the plot held few real surprises.
The unfolding side plot of Nick seeing the widowed Sasha Peters (see 'Heavy Traffic') has some potential, but not enough to make this episode any more grabbing.
I am watching the episodes through on the DVD sets, and have not seen most second series episodes before (I had not yet discovered the series at this point when it was shown on my local ITV region in the mid-1990s), so I was annoyed that the menus themselves contain spoilers. You can't access and episode without going through the "chapters" page, and one clearly shows lawyer Walters being arrested, spoiling the whole outcome of the story. Grrr. A bit short-sighted of the menu designers and not the first instance of such a spoiler (this doesn't affect my overall rating of the episode, but I wanted to comment on it).
All-in-all, I find 'Ripples on the Pond' a very uncommon episode of this point in the show's run, in that it is just so dull, with little to really grab the attention. Sadly I give this one a much lower than usual score of 6.5.moreless
