There is celebration in Mt. Thomas as Tom gets a service medal for 30 years in the force. But the celebrations are marred when a young Aboriginal woman injures Grace and claims Tom stole her from her family as a child. The Heelers soon discover that when Tom was new to the force, in 1973, he was involved in helping the government remove some Aboriginal children from their families. Where he lived as a child, out near Lake End Mission, was the scene of his removing Kim Cook and her two brothers from their violent father. Kim's life was destroyed in foster homes and her brothers both died (one of drugs and one of suicide). Tess, Evan and PJ stand by the boss but Jo believes it is more his fault for taking the children. Meanwhile, Chris believes Kim is responsible for stealing some money at the pub that the town had pooled to buy Tom an antique mirror for his 30 years. Kim denies it and her alibi seems to check out, but when they discover she has a boy in the room with her, they think he may be responsible. As it turns out he is her son Jay and she was keeping him there after a simple mistake. Chris wants them out but Jo convinces her to let them stay the night. After Kim gets away with assault after a man gave her a racist insult, Chris comes to the station again even angrier. Kim and Jay cleared out without paying, taking blankets, towels, food and the like. As it turns out, the money was stolen by another but Kim has a long criminal record in New South Wales, including stealing her child off his foster parents. Tom goes back to Lake End to try and find the couple, and discovers that it is run by the widow of one of his best friends. She, an aboriginal who went to school with him, only remembers him as being racist and, although she tells him Kim and Jay aren't there, is even more incensed when he continues asking her. Tom suffers painful reflections of his early days while there. Jo and Evan find the others camping out in the bush and Jo goes in, although Tom warns her not to. While trying to catch Jay, Kim comes to his rescue and he runs away. She won't tell them where he went, until she meets Annie, who they discover is her aunt. Tom finally says sorry to Kim for what he did, and the two are allowed to stay with Annie until Kim's court cases in New South Wales are through. Meanwhile, Grace convinces Tom that he is a good man, despite what others may say.moreless
