Although probably not one of 'Blue Heelers's all-time classic plots, I found 'The Homecoming Queen' to be a very enjoyable episode. As with many BH stories, it is as much (maybe even more) about the characters and their interaction as the actual plot developments, and this episode had a great sense of fun and humour that had maybe been missing from some of the second seasons other, more serious stories.
The story is written by John Wood, who of course stars as Sgt. Tom Croydon. As well as an actor, Wood is an accomplished writer (amongst many other works, he penned 11 episodes of another of my Australian favourites, the classic 'Prisoner: Cell Block H'), and with 'The Homecoming Queen', certainly comes up with a likeable tale.
Things start off amusingly as Maggie wins a radio competition to see popular country singer Francine Wyatt, only to be teased and jibed by the other officers. These early stages of the story are really fun, so I was slightly disappointed that this element of the tale just kinda faded away, without really feeling to play out; but it didn't matter too much in the end, as the rest of the story was engaging enough.
I wasn't too sure about Jacqy Phillips as Francine, who had slowly made a name for herself after years of working the circuit. Phillips puts in a decent enough performance, but I just didn't feel she had that special something that the character should have had, and found it hard to really warm to the character as a result.
By the way, by this point, Tom's daughter Susan is starting to get on my nerves to be honest; so I wasn't too disappointed when she announced she was leaving to return to University at the end of the story.
But on the whole, despite minor quibbles mentioned above, I found this to be a really fun story. Just the little moments, such as the mix-up over the lunch orders (and Nick moaning away about having a pie, a cold pie) really make episodes such as this, and are one of my favourite things about the series. The plot, although decent, isn't a BH classic, but there are enough enjoyable things about this episode for me to give it a very respectable 9.5 out of 10.moreless
