    This review contains spoilers.

I'm not really sure how I feel about 'The Long and Winding Road'. It is a fair episode, but the evening I watched it to review on DVD, I had had a very stressful day plus received some sad family news, which may have prevented me from enjoying it as much as I might have. But I'll try and give the ep a reasonable, balanced review as I can.

One thing I did find with this episode is that it lacks any of the show's trademark humour. I appreciate (and quite like) that they were going for something slightly more serious here, but at the same time, I did miss the light-hearted banter to break things up a bit.

As soon as Wayne and Nick meet Eva and Claire, the two foreign backpackers, at the start of the story, you just know that there's going to be complications, and that probably, the British girl, Claire, is going to be trouble (why is the villain ALWAYS British?) =)

Speaking as a Brit myself, it was nice to see a Brit in an overseas show with a reasonably realistic accent Claire's London accent for the most part sounds spot on. Some other shows, particularly American ones, often give British characters HIDEOUS accents that don't sound realistic at all.

Anyway, sure enough, we soon get the big "pull" of the episode Eva is bumped off, out in the country in the middle of the night, putting Wayne in an awkward situation as he had spent the night with Claire. Hence the beginning of an investigation where everyone but Wayne seems able to see that Claire is a dark horse.

I for one knew Claire had a lot to hide from the off, but it was interesting to see the plot unfold and the revelations that came with it.

I did wonder if in the final scene, if Wayne actually had money and objects stolen by the fleeing Claire, but told P.J. that nothing was missing just to try and save some pride.
By the way, I did find it a bit odd that the fleeing Claire "could be miles away by now", with absolutely no attempt to find her surely a backpacker on foot couldn't have got THAT far?! They didn't even seem to put out a bulletin on her!

All-in-all, I'm not sure how I feel about this episode. It definitely lacks the show's usual charm, but it is a quite engaging plot, that will have you screaming "Wake up, Wayne!" at the TV screen. I give this one a reasonable 8.5 / 10.moreless
