    This review contains spoilers.

I know I said it about the previous episode, "The Long and Winding Road", but I'm really not sure about how I feel about "The Old School Tie".

It has a decent plot, but I found it to be carried out a bit awkward and clunkily, and not being as clear is it should have been.

I like the scenes of bickering between Wayne and Maggie as they make their way through the bushland; well executed, and a nice location shoot. And when they find the wrecked plane, this too is well done. But without Wayne and Maggie being able to make radio contact with HQ I thought at one stage that this might turn into a "survival" episode, which would have been quite good. But instead, they are picked up before long, and we head into a rather unfocused and at times unclear investigation about just who the mysterious fifth passenger was on the over-capacity aircraft, and her connection with the "family values" politician who pulled her out.

This section could have been very interesting, but it just didn't seem to play out very well; It wasn't made clear early enough about the politician and the supposed values he promoted, and so for much of the episode I found myself playing catch up.

The ending is also very abrupt; It's a nice twist that someone gets off scot free for a change, but things pretty much stop dead, as if they ran out of time (if this had been an off-air recording and not the complete DVD version, I would have thought it had been edited!).

As I also felt with "The Long and Winding Road", with the show in it's mid-second season, various character developments, and the departure of Rose a few episodes previously, the series feels to be somewhat moving into it's next phase. As such, things feel to me to have slightly lost their footing at around this point. Thankfully, things are back on form again soon.

All-in-all... Can't really decicde about this one. As I say, I love the bushland shoot and the wrecked plane sequences, but the subsequent investigation is handled clumsily and quite unclearly at times. Due to those two gripes, I give this one 7.5 / 10.moreless
