Wow, what a powerful episode. What seems to start out as a routine enquiry into a spate of local burglaries, turns out to be something much more serious.
Tom's wayward daughter Susan has fallen under the influence of a local 'cult'. As soon as I saw her I knew she was under this kind of spell; it took the officers a little longer to work it out, and almost laughed at Nick when he suggested it.
The episode plays out very well, with strong performances as per usual from all of the main cast. I love how Tom is away, reluctantly accepting his medal, unawares that Susan has been grabbed by Wayne and is back at the station where Nick is desperately trying to 'deprogramme' her.
My only two *very minor* niggles, are that the whole cult element does seem a bit rushed and Susan come out from under their influence over just a couple of hours (we are led to understand that it is out of upset for the death of her mother, Tom's wife Nell), whereas some other TV shows and films depicting such process show the methods to take weeks. My other niggle... the head-to-head scenes between Nick an Susan, which take up much of the episode, are very well done, and particularly well played by William McInnes, but I did feel went on slightly too long in places and could have been tightened up a bit in post-production.
...But these are only very mild gripes, and the only thing that prevent this episode from getting a perfect 10. As it is, it is a great story (I like the final graveside scene at sunset), and I still give it a very strong 9.5 rating.moreless
