'Unnatural Death' doesn't rank as one of the second season's best episodes, but in itself, it is a very interesting mystery.
The mystery kept me guessing throughout who did kill the Vietnam vet? The schizophrenic man, who claims he "saw the devil" walking around the hospital before the killing, is the obvious suspect, but PJ is certain the vet's Asian wife is behind it. Or is it the vet's brother, after a years-long feud between the pair? Not the mention the vet had been contemplating suicide, to confuse matters even further.
It was very pleasing that Nick one of my favourite characters solved the case almost offhand, with his knowledge of ninja killings (you have to watch the episode for this not to be as ridiculous as it sounds!!).
As someone who has experienced mental health problems in my own family, the final scene, of the schizophrenic man explaining to Tom, via his drawings, what it is like, is very well played out, and gives some vague idea what it must be like to suffer from such a condition.
I can't remember watching this episode here in the U.K., as I was only just discovering the series (tucked away on the middle of Monday afternoons) at around this point, but I suspect that this episode would have been quite heavily edited in places, or skipped altogether, due to some of the graphic scenes, which would not have sat well with ITV's daytime output.
This is one of those episodes that, once you've watched it and know the outcome, it probably has little (immediate) re-watch value, but for a watch once mystery, it is an intriguing story. Not one of my BH favourites, but I still give it a respectable 8 out of 10.moreless
