'Vow of Silence' starts off as a rather average, predicable episode, and one that I thought wasn't going to do much to engage me. Thankfully, by a way in, it develops into a far more interesting story.
Chris's niece Jade is staying with her, as money is being collected for an upcoming function to raise money for the local church. Before long, the money goes missing predictably, Jade is behind it. It turns out that Jade has been sexually molested, and so begins an investigation to try and find the culprit.
It does seem slightly convenient that such a prominent church theme complete with Father McTernan is introduced earlier in the episode, for things to eventually slot together, but that is just one of the conventions of TV shows; I won't hold it against this particular episode too much.
Anyway, things unfold with Father McTernan becoming the prime suspect (particularly from the non-Church P.J.), but toyshop owner Stuart McGuire, a friend of Jade's mother, also becomes a suspect. The Heelers can act on neither until they get solid proof. This leads to some nice soul searching scenes from Maggie, and her scenes as she visits the church are particularly wrong.
I won't give away too much else of the plot, but just to say I found it very well put together and thought out. Of course, in between all this there are some nice ensemble scenes with the main cast, as Wayne offers a computer dating service to match people up for the upcoming function and P.J. bribes him to fix him up with an attractive teacher he meets during the investigation.
What started out to be a rather average, predictable tale of a tearaway child soon developed into something far deeper. In the early stages, I thought this episode would only rank in the 7s, but by the wonderful late stages, I considered it to be a very strong 9.5.moreless
