Well, this is the first episode of Season 2*, but production appears to have continued directly on from the end of Season 1 from what I can tell. (* - as for the DVDs, they follow a totally different pattern in breaking up the seasons!)
Anyway, 'Without a Trace' is a fairly good episode of 'Blue Heelers'. Definitely not a series classic, by any means, but a reasonable episode in itself.
After being introduced as a rather dislikeable character in the previous episode, here trainee Detective Rose Egan is portrayed in a more favourable light; and she is the main investigator of the mysterious events in this story.
Straight off, I guessed the young neighbouring farm hand would be behind the disappearances. Just the way he was introduced I guessed straight away. Even so, it is interesting to watch as the story unfolds. And I have to confess, I thought the daughter would somehow be tied in to the killings, but was proven wrong there.
The other story thread of a neighbouring farmer claiming to have witness a UFO, which left a strange crop circle on one of his fields (which turns out to be a hoax), adds both some much needed humour, and also contributes to the overall plot, as for a time he becomes the prime suspect in the family's disappearance.
The final revelation of how the farm hand killed the farmers, in particular graphically describing how he hunted down the wife as she tried to escape and her animal-like struggle to survive, and showing no remorse, is particularly haunting. I don't think I had discovered 'Blue Heelers' at this point when it was shown here by various ITV regions in the U.K., but I can imagine that this harrowing description would have been edited down by them for their family-friendly daytime slot.
Not one of my favourites of the series by any means, but a fair episode.moreless
