  • If Dr. Moreau had brought the apocalipse with water and fire

    9.0
I feel compelled to start with the obvious: this is not a kiddy anime but an animated series for literate adult audiences.

Blue Submarine No.6 tells the story of a water sunk Earth after a madman's having raised the ocean levels and brought about an army of mutant creatures to wage war on mankind. Everyone and everything went under the surface and the battle is fought on ships and submarines.

The creatures posses salvaged technology fused with living organisms whereas mankind employs the latest on on robotics and hydrodynamics to defend themselves from the unrelenting advance of Zorndyke's army.

There is one last hope, a final assault on the creature's pole base but the Blue Project requires the help of a very particular man so they send their best submariner and ship to get him, the Blue 6.

Mankind only see the creatures trying to exterminate them and the creatures only see the men that ruined their world as a consequence of their innate greed. Zorndyke's soldiers, in spite of being genetic experiments, posses reason. Should they be eliminated in the same way they killed 16 billion people with the flood?

Further the 3D CGI, which was quite a novel in 1999, there is more to this series than a flashy animation; it is a twist on the Island of Dr. Moreau with curious characters and very few clichs though there are some.

Range Murata's character designs bring to life the sadness of the people that survived the end of the world and lost everything dear to them thus giving us a miniseries heavily dependent on action rather than on dialogue as the characters are to busy dealing silently with their angst to talk openly about what every one else feels as well; there's no point in expressing it because we already know.

I got to know Gonzo Studios thanks to this and then watched Last Exile, which is superb too.

The soundtrack is based on fusion Jazz, pretty much like Cowboy bebop, and it leads to an interesting aural experience

There are not many shows like this anymore so give it a try, it will do you good.moreless
  • This is one philosophical anime; I'd suggest it for anybody who likes an anime requiring thought.

    8.5
Blue Sub 6 seems like it could be a typical science fiction anime on the surface and on the DVD cover, but once you begin to watch it, you will notice a fair amount of philosophical topics addressed. The story is of a near-future which has been flooded by a shadowy scientist named 'Zorndyke' who is trying to make humanity pay for its crimes against the natural world. This show addresses the ideas of how humanity interacts with nature as well as science's roll in protecting the Earth. Also, the theme of becoming overly fanatical to a point of endangering that which you desire to save plays a major part in this anime in the latter moments of the show. This is anime is on the high end visually, though it cannot hope to match the quality of Burst Angel or Elfen Lied and definitely worth watching. It has the appeal of a short story whose purpose is more to provoke questions than to answer them.moreless
  • This is Definetly one of my favorite anime movie/shows. I'd reccomend it to everyone.

This is one of the best anime movies I've ever seen, I watched it way back when, when Cartoon network aired it on Tv as a movie the second time around. I fell in love with it immediately. I've been looking to buy it but I can't find the movie version of it anywhere. I think it is good enough to compete with Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, even though they are completely different types of movies. I think I watched it twice actually, I just remeber that the first time I watched it I didn't really understand it, but then the second time through, I watched it again because I loved the world mainly, I got it. The world the movie/show is set in is similar to that of Waterworld which is another great movie. So I think if you haven't seen this, you need to.

And If it seems like this was a very unorganized review it's because i rushed it and I had to have 100 words so ...yah.moreless
