Boardwalk Empire 5.6 "Devil You Know" Review
This was an episode of Boardwalk Empire that will go down for the ages. It had everything that we love about the series – death, brilliant writing, subtle messages from the producers and humour. With it being such a detailed episode and so many sub plots being both started and finished, this review will focus on the overriding themes and arcs in this episode, and we can all discuss specific plot details in the comments below.

All you’ve got to worry about is when you run out of booze. And you run out of company. And the only person left to judge you is you. – Jimmy Darmody

Many years have passed since Jimmy’s final words to Nucky but they’ve probably never been as relevant as they are at the moment. We meet Nucky in a bar drunk, soliloquising and packing a mean punch (not for the first time ...Read more

Boardwalk Empire 5.3 "What Jesus Said" Review
After last week's exciting developments, "What Jesus Said" was a much quieter episode of Boardwalk Empire, taking more time to focus on individual characters as the series heads to its finish. After sending his message to Luciano et al., it was all about business for Nucky as he tried to secure the Bacardi Rum deal with the help of Joe Kennedy. He spent the episode wining and dining him, an aspect of the series viewers have become accustomed to over the series - with food, liquor, and women. But unlike most of the Nucky has attempted to convince to do business with him in the past, Kennedy was more concerned with the sort of man he would be getting into business with, once again sparking a somewhat underwhelming look into his character. Kennedy was concerned that a man like Nucky talked so highly of family, yet didn't have one ...Read more

Boardwalk Empire 5.2 "The Good Listener" Review
Boardwalk Empire is often belittled for its slow-burn pacing, which I have always found odd. Because of the expansive ensemble the series is, encompassing many characters and places as well as the plots that are attached to each, it has always had the luxury of jumping to and from each individual story. This often provides the illusion of plot progression when in actuality very little occurs throughout a single episode. Last week's episode suffered by focusing too much time on a small amount of characters, and those unnecessary Nucky flashbacks didn't help matters. Unfortunately, the flashbacks were still present in this episode (and seem likely to be a permanent part of the series until its end), but the series was able to once again find its footing by indulging us with glimpses of several characters we've dearly missed since the end of season four. Not only that ...Read more

Peaky Blinders - Hidden Gem/Boardwalk Replacement?
Has anyone heard about this show Peaky Blinders (IMDB)/(Wiki) featuring Cillian Murphy. A friend recommended it to me, and apparently it's pretty well liked on IMDB. It's set around the 1920's and is centered around an English Gang of the same name. I'm guessing it's loosely based on real characters.

I haven't watched it yet, but I imagine it might hold some similarities to Boardwalk Empire for anyone looking for a new period piece now that BE is coming to an end. It's only one series/season in.

I was surprised TV.com didn't have a page for it.
