  • Bruised Faces Abound in Tonight's Episode of Boardwalk

    8.0
Van Alden, Chalky & Daughter all had their own decorative bruising to color this week's episode. The episode brought us up to date with Gillian, Richard & Van Alden, whilst also continuing to follow Chalky as he weaves himself into a more tangled web in his relationship with Daughter and his animosity toward Dr Narcissus..

Highlights of this episode begun for me with the portrayal of a weakened Rothstein. When we think back to how confident and carefree he was in the first seasons, it is somewhat shocking to be confronted with this seemingly now broke man, who appears to be down on his luck. His vulnerability at the pool table was apparent for all to see. One has to wonder if it is what it seems, or he is playing a long con for a bigger payoff. Still Nucky's comment as he offered to buy Doyle's life insurance was priceless, "Might just be the best investment I've ever made. I know at least 12 ppl who would kill him for free!"

The scene between Narcissus & 'Daughter' had me on the edge of my seat. The psychological power he wields over her and the slow calculated way he spoke made me pretty certain he might snap her neck at any moment. Still the beating he gave Daughter, leaving the beauty with a bruised and nearly unrecognisable face was nearly as shocking. It is interesting to watch Chalky as he is drawn deeper and deeper into his attraction for Daughter. He has completely checked out of his family at the moment, so intense is his passion for the new Performer in his life.

I don't think there is a scene with Richard that doesn't move me. The man wears his heart on his sleeve, and the pain he has suffered is always apparent to see. The casual way in which he agreed to the marriage proposal after all he has been through was classic, and then to top it off, his scene with Nucky in the fog had me in laughter:

    Richard: "I got married

Nucky: "You came all the way here to tell me that?"

Lets hope Nucky hires Richard, you really couldn't find a more perfect guard dog!

After nearly two seasons of the mostly humble and subdued Mueller, it was just a joy to watch him reignite ithe depths of his original cahacracter -part man, part crazy! And I have to say, he did it with style. Taking out his old work colleagues in three shots, telling O'Banion that he strangled his former business partner with his bare hands, and demanding of his wife, that she finally recognise him for who he is, Nelson Van Alden, was flawless. When we saw him demand of his wife that she undresses, and their passionate love making, I reflected back to the first season when he used to cut himself, and the awkward love scene with Lucy, and thought how far along this man has come in the charisma stakes!

The closing scene is almost a familiar one as we watch Nucky reach out to a woman who he wants to trust, and someone who he feels he can talk to. Nucky is the man at the top, but the top can be a lonely place! All in all an episode I couldn't stop watching!moreless
