Alice has unknowingly hired a gentleman by the name of Timothy Doyle - A charity client of Ted's - To do some handiwork, around the house. When Ted finds out, he is a bit distressed, but agrees to keep the alcoholic old guy around for a while, to help him get back on his feet. Doyle (Patrick Hawley) is a very enthusiastic, hard worker, and agrees to help the Sanderses with their upscoming garage sale. When an invitation to go on a picnic with the Hendersons is too tempting to pass up, Bob and Carol agree to leave Doyle in charge of the sale, while they leave with Ted and Alice. Upon their return from the picnic, all are shocked to find that Doyle has sold all of the Sanderses' furniture, and Doyle is nowhere to be found. Doyle's detailed list of patrons of the garage sale is found, and they manage to recover most of their furniture. When the police bring the very drunk Doyle back to the Hendersons, they decide not to press charges, and keep Doyle around, to help him reestablish himself as a productive member of society.
