Ben, Hoss, and Joe were told to smile for their pictures, though at this time in history (1868), it was not customary for subjects to smile. It would take a while for the picture to be taken and would be hard for a person to hold a smile for a long period of time.

Candy: You mean you're not extending the famous Cartwright hospitality?
Candy: Were the boys resisting one of your fatherly lectures, Mr. Cartwright?
Ben: I'm not in the habit of giving lectures, and if I do, it's possibly because they're needed. Might have been a good idea if your father had given you a few.
Candy: Oh he did.
Ben: Well obviously they didn't have much effect.
Candy: Oh, yes they did; I left home.
