A band of ex-Confederate soldiers demand $25,000 from Ben to finance the formation of a Second Confederacy. Hoss tries to fight them and is shot by their leader, Shanklin. With the doctor unable to complete the surgery and Hoss near death, a nearly inconsolable Ben tries to persuade Shanklin, a competent doctor, to save his son's life.
