    The Cartwrights are granted a contract to provide lumber for a new trestle bridge for the railroad, much to the dissapointment of an old friend of Ben's. Ben throws himself wholeheartedly into the job, until a man gets killed in a lumber accident in which Ben is also injured. To make matters worse, Ben blames himself for his employee's death (the employee also happened to be a friend of his). He gives up on life until one day when he gets a visit from his rival who shows Ben how just how badly he had let himself go. He also realized how much his boys were affected by having to run the Ponderosa on their own and how frustrated they were with their father's lack of spirit. The thing that snapped him out of it, was a visit from his dead friend's daughter, who showed him how he was not responisble for the accident. So, he starts picking himeslf up out of his despair and finding the courage and drive to continue living again!moreless
