Adam witnesses the murder of a way station manager by two men during a hold up. Though they're wearing burlap bags over their heads, Adam is sure that he recognizes one of them. The man has an alibi, as two women claim to have seen him in Virginia City the morning of the robbery. Everyone believes there wasn't enough time for him to commit the murder and get to town. The ride has one of my all time favorite opening scenes of Bonanza. Adam and Toby, the station manager, are just waking up, after Adam gets stuck there the night before. Adam has his hat tilted over his eyes and his chair leaned back against the post of the porch, talking in a lazy drawl. The dialogue between the two is hysterical.

The action and drama in the episode is equally entertaining. There is a great scene in which the wife of the killer tries to seduce Adam, promising that they could be "much closer" if Adam with stop his attempts to prove Bill Enders was the one who killed Toby. The camera work in that scene, with it's close up of Adam and Mary Enders, with Mary whispering provocatively in Adam's ear, is really excellent.

The last part of the story, which shows Adam trying to make the ride from the station to town in a set amount of time, to disprove Enders alibi, is very entertaining. I also enjoy the fact that both Hoss and Joe help Adam in his quest for the truth.moreless
