Richard Thomas was just two years away from his signature role as John-Boy Walton on The Waltons. The producers of Bonanza had wanted make Thomas' character Billy (who was one of the Weary Willies) a recurring role, but this idea was later scrapped.
Singer Michael Martin Murphy performed the song, "The Weary Willies." Murphy – whose string of country-pop hits include "Wildfire" (1975), "What's Forever For" (1982) and "A Long Line of Love" (1987) – is best known for his many cowboy albums.
