AIRED:
A tragedy unfolds at Bondi when lifeguards are unable to locate a man last seen swimming at the southern end of the beach. Identified for a brief moment struggling to stay afloat, he disappears from view behind waves. Not having seen him go under and with no friends, family, or witnesses forthcoming, lifeguards can’t be sure anyone is actually missing - with 20,000 people still needing to be monitored, the search is called off after 45 minutes.

Yet at the end of the day, when the sun sets and lifeguards pack up, a 16 year old boy approaches with information his father has been missing for 2 hours, immediately their worst fears are realised.

For everyone who visits the beach, this special episode of Bondi Rescue highlights the need for all beach goers to be aware of the dangers posed by the ocean.

  • What a sad day for the Bondi lifesavers...

    9.9
The episode started off in a usual manner, following the lifeguards as they started their day.

When a man is thought to have been seen struggling and go under, a manic rush occured to save the man. However, time progressed and he could not be found, hence, the lifeguards thinking the man had found safety.

However, when a boy tells a lifeguard his father had been missing for 2 hours - it is obvious that the man had not found safety at all, and the search for him turns grim as too much time had passed.

The Mongolian immigrant had died in the surf - the first one in four years.

The episode makes on really think on how dedicated these lifeguards really are - even when they're acting like total tools and having fun.

The conclusion was heartbreaking - with the deceased's family being forced to move back to Mongolia. However, the fact that the lifeguards attended the man's funeral had me giving my respect to these guys - and the fact that they started a trust fund to help the family return to Australia made them seem so admirable in my eyes.moreless
  • Tragedy at Bondi! For the first time in 4 years, the lifeguards have had a drowning while on duty. A truely touching episode that shows how deadly the beach is and how quickly things can change.moreless

January 20, 2007 is one day the Lifeguards at Sydney's Bondi Beach are unlikely to forget. One of the Lifeguards thought he had spotted a swimmer in trouble. In the two seconds he took his eyes away to call for a Jetski to help in the rescue, the swimmer was gone. What follows is surely going to be on the boys minds for a long time to come. A 45 minute land and sea search failed to come up with any signs of the swimmer sighted as having trouble and the search was called off with no leads to go on. Until the boys were packing up for the day an hour and a half later...

R.I.P. Yondon Dungu Donations can be made to a trust fund in his name.
