Some kids are camping, and one named Joey finds a disgusting-looking decomposing body billed with maggots. We then cut to nighttime, with Cam examining the body and Booth standing next to her. Bones appears, wondering why she was called to the scene since the body is still really fleshy. She thinks it was a set-up to get her and Booth to work together better, but Cam says it was because the body's feet are missing. Booth finds a blood trail which leads to the body's feet.
Back at the lab, Cam and Bones examine the body. Cam observes Bones "being competitive between flesh and bone" in her examination. Hodgins comes in and talks about how Angela is getting hypnotized so she can find out her first husband's name, since Berimbau was a nickname. Booth comes in and says the victim was identified as Ed Milner. Hodgins says the cream found on Ed's nose and mouth was sunscreen formulated for horses. Cam finds horse food in Ed's stomach. Bones finds evidence of a bit based on patterns on Ed's teeth.
After the opening theme, we see Booth interviewing Ed's wife. She says nothing was wrong with their marriage. When Booth asks her if she knows if he had any relations to horses, she says no.
Back at the lab, Brennan is researching horses online. She finds similarities to horse burials and the way Ed was killed.
We cut Cam weighing organs as Angela walks in looking for Brennan. Angela says she doesn't think hypnosis works, but Cam assures her that it's a proven technique and boosts her confidence.
Booth and Bones stop at The Ambassadora Bed & Breakfast to find out more about Ed. The guy at the front desk seems hesitant to give them any information, but eventually shows them what goes on at The Ambassadora - people engage in pony play fantasy all day every day. One person pretends to the horse and the other pretends to be their rider. A lot of important people, like doctors and lawyers, are revealed to take part in the pony fantasies. Bones asks which rider was the last to ride Ed, and Anne Marie Osterbach (Annie Oakley in the pony world) says it was her. Booth and Bones interview her, and Annie says that Ed was a great "horse." She says that no one from her community has ever caused any trouble, but tells them to check out Ed's wife because she walked in on Annie cleaning the "horse" Ed.
Booth and Bones discuss their views on pony fantasies in the car on the way to interviewing Ed's wife again. She says she lied and said she didn't know about Ed's fetish to protect her family. She says she found out about Ed's fetish when she got a call from a guy with a foreign accent who told her where he was and that he was with another woman. She said that after she saw what he was doing she got a divorce lawyer.
Back at Booth's office, Bones says she thinks Ed's wife isn't the culprit and explains her reasoning, which convinces Booth to agree with her. They decide they have to go back to The Ambassadora.
At the lab, Zack tells Hodgins about how he's trying to determine the murder weapon.
Booth and Bones arrive back at The Ambassadora, looking for a pony with an accent. They interview Calvin Johnson, or "Thor," arguing about the values role-playing on their way over to him. Thor admits that he called Ed's wife to get Annie as a jockey, but denies that he killed Ed. Bones thinks Thor has motive.
At the lab, Angela talks to Hodgins about her upcoming Hypnotism session. Angela is having trouble finding a picture of her and Berimbau that someone took of them right after they got married. She knows it's in a book but she doesn't know which one. Hodgins heads over to Zack, who thinks he's figured out the murder weapon - a hoof knife. They test and confirm Zack's theory. Zack ignored Hodgins suggestions, which makes him mad.
We then cut to Hodgins tying Cam's hands together with bailer's twine, saying that's what Ed was tied up with. This is helpful because it's a very specialized product with few sales that can be tracked down easily to find a list of buyers.
Bones walks in on Angela who's trying to calm herself down. She says the doctor told her she wasn't relaxed enough when she went in to try to get hypnotized. She says she's going back so she has to try to get calm. Brennan seems to be no help with Angela's situation.
Booth interviews the guy who runs The Ambassadora (Lucky), who was the buyer of the bailer's twine. It's revealed that Annie was his ex-wife, which would have given him motive to kill Ed. We find out that Lucky had a hoof knife, but a guy named Tom Mularz stole it. Tom came to The Ambassadora promoting the consumption of horse meat (he's a butcher), bringing along flyers, and Lucky kicked him out. The next morning, the flyers and the hook knife were gone. Lucky realizes that his hook knife was stolen the same day Ed was murdered.
Back at the lab, Hodgins tries to tell Zack he found something out, but Zack ignores him. Hodgins eventually gets to tell Zack what he found, but Zack says he also knew what Hodgins knew. Once again, Hodgins gets mad at Zack.
Booth and Bones arrive at Tom's butcher show to interview him. When Booth reveals he's FBI, Tom runs. Booth and Bones catch him though and bring him back to interview him. Tom says he was a rider, but didn't know Ed was dead. He said he ran from Booth because he signed up for the National Guard but then deserted his responsibility - so he thought Booth was trying to arrest him for that. Tom then says he went to his parents' house after getting his flyers back, explaining that he's innocent.
Angela is back with the hypnotist/doctor and manages to get hypnotized this time.
Cam responds to Bones' page back at the lab, and Bones asks her about Ed's eyes. Bones doesn't think that maggots ate out Ed's eyes; instead she thinks the killer gouged out his eyeballs using the hoof knife. This leads to the theory that a doctor killed Ed. This theory brings them back to Annie Oakley, who's a doctor.
We cut back to Angela, who's having some trouble with her hypnotism. Instead of seeing her husband, she sees a huge wasp. The hypnotist says Angela should come back for another session, but Angela doesn't agree.
Booth and Bones are back at The Ambassadora once again, this time in the barn with Lucky and Annie, explaining that they have a search warrant. Annie once again denies she killed Ed, but then after Booth and Bones find the hoof knife and explain that her and Ed's blood would be on it, confirming her guilt, Annie admits that she is indeed guilty.
Angela tells Hodgins that the wasp brought her to a book with a wasp on the cover, which had a picture of her and Berimbau on it. The back of the picture has Berimbau's real name on it, and we find that Angela really does want to find Berimbau so she can divorce him and marry Hodgins.
In the last scene we see Booth and Bones at the Royal Diner. Booth and Bones once again disagree about the quality of sex for the people who engage in pony play. Booth makes a speech about true love and togetherness, which to his surprise convinces Bones that he's right.
