The victim's brother's name is Will Hastings in this episode. In the season 1 episode "The Graft in the Girl," the name of the man whose bones were illegally used in bone grafts was also Will Hastings.
In this episode Brennan learns about Booth and Cam's relationship (which the audience just found out about in the previous episode). It is not Booth who tells her, but she finds out herself when she sees Cam reaching for Booth's hand while they all watch the scary video made in the woods.
Joshua Leonard appears as Nate Gibbons. Leonard is famous for his role in The Blair Witch Project, of which this episode is a parody.
Brennan: So you talked to Ms. Cinders? That must have been difficult since she doesn't have a head.
Booth: (concerned) You want me to go down there with you?
Brennan: No, I don't want the remains compromised.
Bones: (Walks in and sees Hodgins lounging in front of the video footage screen) Have you finished with the particulates from the ax handle?
Hodgins: I've determined that the assailant was wearing rough hewn leather gloves but I still have to check...
Booth: Then why are you in here?
Angela: Because I want him here.
Booth: ...perfect cover, headless witch did it, not me.
(After Booth has arrested Will he joins Brennan in her office)
Brennan: I sure know how to pick 'em. Don't I?
Booth: Well, you know, our perceptions are always colored by what we hope, what we fear, what we love. We do the best we can.
Brennan: I'm afraid my best isn't good enough. I can read bones, not people.
Booth: Oh, you know, you had no trouble seeing through me. (smiles at her and she smiles back)
Brennan: It's a good thing I like being alone.
Booth: You know what Bones? You're not alone, ok? (She's turned her back to him, he touches her on the shoulder to turn her around, after a little hesitation she does)
Booth: You're my partner, ok? It's a guy hug. Take it.
(They hug real tight, Booth smiling thoughtfully and Brennan looking happy and safe)
Brennan: I didn't say anything.
Booth: But you're looking at me, as if I'm in trouble and you're a teacher.
Brennan: You're very touchy lately Booth.
Booth: Look Bones, I don't know why I didn't tell you about Cam.
Brennan: Did I mention Cam?
Booth: I just didn't want it to get weird I guess.
Booth: We're partners, you know? Together all the time, right? You're a woman, and I'm a man, and I never had a relationship, like this. Where we were like two guys. Except you're not, you know, a guy! (trying to convince himself) Yeah.
Brennan: No. No, I'm not… Should I feel odd about wanting to hang out with Will?
Booth: No. Of course not, you know? Because… essentially… I mean you're a guy, like me. But not really.
Brennan: That would mean that, to me, you are essentially a woman. (Booth looks at her surprised and displeased) Yeah, I can see that.
Booth: No, no, no, no, no. I'd prefer not to be a woman if you don't mind.
Brennan: I'm merely trying to follow your reasoning, Booth.
Booth: Ok, fine. What do you say we just, you know, drop it for now?
Angela: I'm almost done with her face.
Brennan: Why are you spending time with that? It won't help the case.
Hodgins: C'mon, let the kids have some fun, Mom.
Booth: Oh, you know when a woman finds out that a man has been cheatin' on her she can get pretty mad. (after noticing the looks he receives from Zack and Brennan) It's what I heard. Okay look we got a motive and opportunity. It fits.
Brennan: Lori was not Graham's only girlfriend. He had lots of girlfriends, but he somehow managed to keep them secret from each other.
Booth: So what would happen if a very jealous Lori found out?
Brennan: I don't know, that's more your territory.
Booth: What? What am I, cheating?
Brennan: (amused) I just meant that you use psychology. You're very touchy. Perhaps because of all your skulking around?
Booth: I'm discreet, okay? It's different. A gentleman is discreet. Okay?
Hodgins: What's with the music?
Angela: It helps to muffle the screams so I don't pass out every few seconds.
Cam: (after Zack tests out the first weapon) My God. A little warning, Zack.
Zack: I don't usually announce each phase of my experiments.
Cam: Yeah, maybe you should start.
Cam: Hacking off someone's head is more like cutting down a small tree than splitting a log.
Zack: I find your imagery both colorful and accurate.
Zack: (about the bloody video everyone just saw) I just keep hearing the screams. I never heard screams like that, Dr. Brennan.
Cam: My mother came to me the day after she died. I wasn't some kid, I was 23. She came to me... she came to me and told me to look in her dresser, third drawer, behind her pink blouse. There was something there for me.
Brennan: By walking out, maybe Russ gave me my life.
Booth: You know, what Will said, he was right, you turned out ok. (smiles at her, Brennan doesn't smile back but looks at him pondering, knowing what she knows about him and Cam)
Brennan: I'm going to have coffee with him.
Booth: That was quick.
Brennan: He understands something no one else I know does. People need connection Booth, even me. Obviously, you have one with Cam. So…
Booth: (in shock) What?
Brennan: I thought you'd mention it. I mean, isn't that what partners do, tell each other about their lives?
Booth: Wait a second. Look Bones I…
Brennan: Sorry. I'm sorry I forgot how self conscious you are talking about sex.
Booth: I am not… I'm…
Hodgins: It's always an axe, isn't it? Remember The Shining?
Zack: My palms perspired profusely during that film.
Brennan: Zack, place some garlic around the remains and chant the Mung ritual for preservation of souls.
Brennan: (chuckles in disbelief) This is going to be a long case.
Angela: (after seeing what looks like the witch on the tape to Hodgins) Can I stay at your house tonight?
In both the original and repeat airings, part of a line of dialogue of Booth's is deleted from the soundtrack. The line sounds something like: "Lori loves Graham, he thinks he loves her, but finds out that he doesn't so she goes all ... at him." The closed-captioning doesn't display anything after the word "doesn't."

There are a few unique running themes in this episode - static scene transitions and white flash segues into commercial breaks - that tie into the Blair Witch-type storyline of the episode.
When Booth says that he was going to talk to the girl about her "magical mystery tour" in the woods, he was talking about the Beatles' album "The Magical Mystery Tour". It's known that it was made under the influence of LSD.
Booth: I'm just saying, you know, I see a lot of weird things. It was like, you know, Exorcist weird, Elm Street weird.
Booth is referring to classic horror movies:
Exorcist (1973), starring Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, and Max von Sydow, and
the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, with their legendary evil character Freddy Krueger.
Brian: I've got it accepted in the Sundance. (about his Gilgamesh movie)
Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent cinema festival in the U.S. and ranks alongside the most prestigious film festivals worldwide (Venice, Toronto, Cannes, Berlin).
Graham's screenplay was based on the Epic of Gilgamesh, Babylonian poem from about 2000 BC.
Brennan: Do you like Massive Attack?
Bones is mentioning the UK Electronic Band which has their music showcased on fellow Fox shows: Prison Break and House. House also uses the band as its theme song.
This entire episode is an allusion to The Blair Witch Project, from the legend of a witch haunting the woods where she was killed to the film students talking into the camera.
