Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • what a start to a new season

I know that many reviewers didn't like this, never mind the Booth fans who hated Cam, but I personally think that it was a great and complex episode. Yes , I know that the crime was complicated and perhaps a little far fetched but the character development was superb and this is after all, as stars and producers say, a character driven show.

Camille - great character - and her relationship with Booth very interesting and spotted straight away by Angela. Loved the interplay between Booth (don't call me Seely) and Cam ( don't call me Camille). His ego in wondering whether she took the job because of him! His advice to her about protecting her team. In fact he was giving advice in all places, especially when he got Brennan to visit her mother's grave. He is really very protective and tender towards her and she does't appreciate it.

The whole episode was heavily Booth orientated giving us insights into how good he is at reading people. His description of the way Brennan looks long at bones before making a decision was very insightful. Excellent writing and character development.

Brennan's reaction to Cam was really a bit childish. She doesn't give people her trust either. Booth will continue to try and find your father Brennan, just trust him.moreless
  • This is, by far, the worst episode they've ever done. The central plot is crammed into what space is left over from the subplots; they should have delayed one of the subplots. The new character is abrasive and unappealing, and I miss Dr. Goodman.moreless

This episode definitely does not bode well for the coming season. First of all, they should not have attempted to cram the subplot of the new character and the continuing story arc regarding Brendan's family into a single episode. They crowded out the main storyline, the details of which became confusing.

Second, what happened to Dr. Goodman? I'm hoping the actor left for some other project, because there's no other reason I can think of to get rid of such a richly entertaining character. Third, which is somewhat linked to the second, is the introduction of Camille. I've never been fond of major cast additions to shows I feel already have the right balance, but this one is just egregiously awful. She's rude, she's high-handed, and she appears to think that the Jeffersonian staff is her own personal little fiefdom. I could go on for pages about how "do what I tell you or else" is not a managerial style that will endear you to anyone, especially brilliant scientists used to doing things their own way, many of whom could command top salaries elsewhere, but I'll leave it at that. I'll note that while I enjoyed the scene at the end with the DA, it seemed to me that she was defending her own power, not the team.

Fourth, is it really necessary for every female on the show to have the hots for Booth? Is it some sort of sop to the actor's ego? It's irritating and completely unnecessary.moreless
  • The intro sequence is a MUCH welcomed improvement. The addition of a new female character opposite Bones is fantastic! This is going to be a very interesting season.

Pleased that Bones had been renewed for another season, I anticipated the return all summer. I was thrilled with the beginning of what could be another fantastic season.

The intro sequence is a MUCH welcomed improvement! You can actually tell which names go with which faces.

The addition of a new female character, Cam, opposite Bones is fantastic! The spark between Bones & Booth is present as ever. Now not only does this show have 2 already strong starring female characters, but has gloriously added a 3rd.

It's interesting to watch the cast's reactions towards the past love insinuations between Booth & Cam. Cam certainly holds her own & wows Dr. Brenan at the end. Bones triumphs as always gaining approval from Cam. This is going to be a very interesting season!moreless
  • Well written, tight plot, some great moments between Booth and Brennan; all in all, a great episode to start off the season.

This episode didn't disappoint. I read the original character sides when they came out earlier this summer, and was expecting a good premiere, but most often I found that great acting combined with the new look this season, far surpassed my expectations.

The episode did a great job of setting up the rest of the season; as far as finding Brennan's father, Booth's gambling issues, as well as establishing the relationships between the main characters.

Any complaints about the episode seem to address the appearance of Dr. Cam and the absence of Dr. Goodman. I think this anxiety will slowly ebb away as the season continues. I think we're all just a little wary of change when it comes to our favorite crime-solving team. As for Dr. Goodman, we're all hoping that he'll be back at some point, and with any luck the our wishes will be granted. Even Hanson has expressed the desire to have him back on the show if possible.

Anyway, I'm up to episode 7 in the character sides, and I'm most definitely anticipating a great season; full of the usual tension/bantering, hook-ups, and suspenseful moments, as well as heart-felt ones.moreless
  • An amazing start for a amazing TV show

    OMG!! I really enjoyed it!

Sometime had pass since we last saw our favorite characters and the relationship between Booth and Bones have really evolve!! They are true friends now and we can see it clearly. Both actors did an amazing job and it was nice to see how they are playing with their characters and relationships.

A new boss is around and we can see how different she is from Bones and the interaction between them will be a most watch on the show... hopefully anyways because I really hate the idea of her and for now I'm still hating her and it will be kept in that way until she shows me that I can love her (means getting away from Booth!).

The storyline on her parents was still there neither forgotten neither right on top so it will not steal the rest of the storylines on the show.

It's going to be a long agony waiting for the next one and maybe I will die during the baseball hiatus!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Booth now has a black Motorola Razr. Last season he used a silver one. The black model is currently more popular.

    • Dr. Saroyan calls Zack 'Zackaroni' because he eats macaroni with cheese for lunch every day, but in another season three episode he mentions having a "Cup O' Soup" for lunch, so she's technically incorrect.

    • Dr. Goodman's absence from the show is explained as him taking a two month sabbatical.

  • QUOTES (34)

    • Brennan: Do that lying thing!
Booth: Could you be more specific?

    • (Booth and Brennan at her mother's grave. Brennan sees something in the grass next to the grave and picks it up.)
      Booth: What do you got?
Brennan: A dolphin. What does that tell you?
Booth: What does that tell you?
      Brennan: My father was here.
Booth: Because he loves your mother and grieves her loss and he came here to talk to her. (He takes the dolphin out of the evidence bag Brennan put it in.)
      Brennan: You're tainting evidence.
Booth: It's not that kind of evidence, Bones. It's evidence to something else. Something that can't be tainted.
(He hands her the dolphin and she looks at it for awhile.)
      Brennan: It's beautiful.
      Booth: Yeah.

    • Brennan: How am I gonna tell Russ that our father ordered the death of another human being?
Booth: If he did that - I'm not saying it happened that way - then your father took down the man who murdered his wife.
Brennan: Good people don't have other people murdered. Good people don't even know how.
Booth: Your father buried your mother in a pair of new shoes in a cemetery, with her dolphin belt buckle that reminded her of you because you both love dolphins.
Brennan: That does not make him a good man.
Booth: People can be more than one thing. (Brennan looks at him) We were at a dead end, now we're not, okay? We know that your father got to Mitchell Downs, persuaded him to kill McVicar. We find out how he did that, we're that much closer to finding out what happened to your old man. I mean, that's if you still wanna find him.
      Brennan: I do.
      Booth: Okay. Silver lining.

    • (Booth and Brennan arrive at the crime scene)
      Cam: Seeley.
      Booth: Camille.
      Cam: Don't call me Camille.
Booth: Don't call me Seeley. Dr. Brennan, Dr. Saroyan. You two know each other, right?
      Brennan: No.
      Cam: No.
      Booth: Oh-oh.

    • Brennan: Come on Booth, the part of you with the big gambling problem must love this idea.
Booth: Right there, that's the reason you didn't get Cam's job.

    • Zack: (amazed) Every bone in his body is broken ...
Hodgins: Dude, he got hit by a train!

    • Cam: (to Hodgins) You're chattering me to death because you hope I'll forget you called me wank-tard.

    • Dr. Brennan: Don't you have to read him his rights before you strangle him?

    • Angela: You didn't actually want the job, did you?
Brennan: I don't even know what the job is.
Angela: Goodman will explain his decision.
Brennan: Goodman appointed Dr. Saroyan while I was on vacation, then took a 2-month sabbatical to avoid me. That explains a lot.
Angela: Alright, you know, I think it's because you are very task oriented.
Brennan: Task oriented is a euphemism for lacking overall perspective.
Angela: Oh No! No. Yeah, yeah, a little.

    • Bones: (To Booth) What's with the siren, why are you driving like a maniac?

    • Dr. Saroyan: (to the Federal Prosecutor) Yeah, it's scary. The whole country will be watching the trial and you don't wanna go in with less than the sure thing. But you put my people on the stand as expert witnesses and that's a sure thing.
      Booth/Bones/Jack/Angela: Not Zack.

    • Hodgins: It's seventy percent amorphous silicon dioxide.
      Booth: What's that?
Hodgins: It's a common, domestic container.
Booth: Oh, like a jar. Why can't we just say "a jar"?

    • Hodgins: Warren Lynch and Senator Davis, killed in one accident? No way that's a coincidence.
Camille: Hey Hodgepodge, all engines reverse. First we identify beyond all shadow of a doubt, then we get paranoid.
Hodgins: I'm cool. As long as paranoia's on the schedule somewhere.

    • Brennan: Why didn't Goodman hire me?
      Booth: My guess? People skills.

    • Camille: Booth, three deaths in the first-class car.
Booth: Ah, homicide. That makes it my case.
Camille: One of them's a senator.
      Brennan: That makes a difference?
      Booth: Facts of life, Bones.

    • Brennan: (to Eddie) You shouldn't swallow heroin. It's dangerous.

    • Dr. Saroyan: I am a diuretic seagull people, everything goes through me.

    • Brennan: Do you see a skull?
Booth: Ok Bones, I'm not looking for a skull.

    • Zack: Booth do either of these count as experiments?
Angela: Cause if they do we could both get fired, by your old sweetheart.
Booth: You know you just quit telling Bones who you think I've slept with.

    • Cam: (to Booth about Brennan) Why hasn't she confronted me?
      Booth: About what?
Cam: About me being parachuted in over her head. Finds me intimidating right?
      (Booth laughs)
      Cam: Hey, I intimidate people!
      Booth: Yeah. Bones doesn't intimidate.
      Cam: Then what?
Booth: You've seen the way she looks at human remains before she makes a decision.
      Cam: Yes.
Booth: You're human remains and she hasn't made a decision yet.

    • Booth: So you took this job for better equipment?
Cam: I spent my whole professional life in basement rooms with no windows now I'm in the Jeffersonian Institute. (looks at Booth) What?
      Booth: Gotta ask.
      Cam: You so do not.
Booth: Or did you take the job because of (points to himself).
Cam: Oh my God, the ego!
Booth: (faints a laugh) Say it!
Cam: Nothing to do with you.
Booth: (doesn't seem very convinced) I need Bones this afternoon.
      Cam:(less than enthusiastic) Ok.
Booth: (defensively) It's about her mother's murder and her father's disappearance.
Cam: Plus, she dedicated her book to you, so -
      Booth: It's a legitimate case.

    • (Booth and Brennan at her mom's grave)
Booth: Now, I'm gonna go stand over here while you, you know, talk to your mom.
Brennan: I told you I don't do that.
(Booth walks away while making the talk sign to her. He stays at a close distance watching over her throughout and urging her on)
Brennan: (feeling stupid) Mom, it's me Temperance. I have questions but you can't answer them, and no offence, but I don't think there's anything here of you but your bones so…(in a whisper) I can't believe I'm doing this. (close to tears) Is Dad a good man or a bad man? He had someone killed, had him murdered, and… What's the truth? Do I-- do I keep looking, or do I let it go like he asked? Who's he protecting? Himself? Or me and Russ? (turns to Booth who pretends he was looking in the other direction) Booth, I asked the questions, and guess what - no answer.
Booth: Well, maybe if you weren't standing right on top of her, took a step to the left, showed just a little respect. Sometimes it takes a while to get an answer, ok? Leave the flowers.
Brennan: (she kneels down and leaves the flowers) I get answers at a lab, you get them from people. Nobody gets answers from a slab of stone.
Booth: Yeah, well I see an answer in this stone. See, you buried your mother as Christine Brennan, the woman that you knew as your mother, and not by her real name, Ruth Keenan. That tells me who you are.

    • Booth: Well it looks like your brother was here.
Brennan: Never understood the idea of bringing flowers.
Booth: (hands her the flowers he brought) Just for once, Bones, do what people do. 'Kay? See how it feels.

    • Booth: "Casu Consulto". What does that mean?
      Brennan: "Accidentally on purpose".
Booth: Why do you know things like this?

    • Eddie: (to Booth about Bones) Where'd you find her?
      Booth: Museum.

    • (Bones and Booth at a stakeout in a car, sitting close together.)
Booth: What we gotta do is we gotta wait until he deals. Catch him in the act.
Brennan: We wait for how long?
      Booth: However long it takes.
Brennan: What do we do while we wait?
Booth: This is a stakeout, we converse.
Brennan: I tried to initiate conversation on the drug war, but -
Booth: Oh, God! Fine. You know what? Let's just talk about something we won't argue about. (Brennan moves back to her seat. Booth exhales.) Been out to your mother's grave?
      Brennan: Not since the funeral.
      Booth: Really?
      Brennan: Why would I?
      Booth: You know, to connect.
      Brennan: She's dead.
Booth: Fine. You know what? Forget it!
Brennan: Dead, as in gone from this world. (Booth moves further away from her. After a little while Brennan again shifts closer to him and gently taps him on the shoulder.) Excuse me. I'm curious, do you talk to the headstone? I mean, what do you, what do you say?
Booth: It looks like I'm talking to the headstone, but what I'm really saying is that - forget about where the words are aimed. What I say is that I remember them.
Brennan: They can't hear you, because they're dead.
Booth: (runs out of patience) My mouth moves, words come out, but none seem to get across the draw-bridge to the princess I know who waits within. (The drug deal goes down.) We're out.
Brennan: (as they chase after the dealer) What princess?

    • Brennan: What?
Booth: The man who was charged with murdering your mother.
Brennan: The pig farmer? Vince McVicar?
Booth: He was killed, today at Alexandria federal facility.

    • Brennan: (to Hodgins) What are her qualifications?
Cam: Chief Coroner of New York for two years, assistant federal coroner before that. How am I doing?
      Brennan: Very well. Impressive.

    • Zack: (to Hodgins) You're saying "dude" way too much.

    • Angela (Talking about Cam and Booth) They have a past.
      Hodgins: Cam and the senator?
      Angela: Cam and Booth.

    • Angela: After Zack nagged me a hundred times.
Zack: It's important for us to explain how the victim's shoulder and elbow were dislocated.

    • Booth: And Cam, she got all bent out of shape.
Brennan: She wants to authorize all experiments.
Booth: Great. You know, Zack and Hodgins, they do an experiment with fake bones and Spam.
Brennan: What is your Spam fixation?
Booth: Defense lawyer hears Spam, he makes a joke, the jury laughs and everything we get from the Jeffersonian is framed as goofy science, you know, from a bunch of squints with no connection to the real world.
      Brennan: That wouldn't happen.
Booth: Really? What about the time you dropped a dead monkey down the elevator shaft?
Brennan: No, that was to show ... (Brennan smiles) Okay, I take your point.
Booth: Cam's goal is a successful prosecution in a court of law.
Brennan: Same as mine and yours.
Booth: Nooo, you're all about finding the truth.
Brennan: Ok, your words say good, but your tone says bad, so it's confusing.
Booth: Cam knows that too much truth is just as bad as too little. See? Which is why she got the job.
Brennan: (pauses) Angela says that you and Cam had a sexual relationship. Does that affect your view of her?
Booth: (aghast) Wildly out of line, just so you know.

    • Brennan: (to Cam) What's that?
Zack: This reminds me of when you interviewed me to be your grad student. (to Cam) She knows what fentanyl is.

    • Cam: If it happens again I will take action, and I'm from New York which means that I will take New York action. Am I clear?
      Brennan: Not at all.
      Zack: I'm from Michigan.
Hodgins: Dr. Saroyan means that she'll make us watch musical theatre.
Cam: Wrong New York, I'm more of the get mugged in broad daylight tradition.
