Episode Summary

Booth and Brennan travel to West Virginia when a mythbuster program host's remains are found in an area with a Chupacabra legend. A legend that fills Booth and Hodgins with glee, and Brennan with the determination to debunk it once and for all. As suspects the victim enraged with his tactics are interviewed, Hodgins lures Angela from the lab for some well-meant exercise—a decision that may have a different lesson than he intended. Meanwhile, back at the lab, Vincent Nigel-Murray has returned and combines his duties with working his Step Nine, which results in some startling revelations.moreless

I would like to first say that I love Bone's scene of humor! I loved how she was kind of silly in this episode. It was a really interesting case with some really good humor.

I like all Nigel's confessions of things he did while he was drunk. Apparently he's an imaginary playa, and I really like Hodgen's revenge on him!

Now, The case was really intresting, and I knew it was her from the second I saw her. I didn't trust either of them. I thought they both seemed a little shadey, but I don't get it, it would have been so much easier if she had just told the police she accidentally shot someone. I guess if people weren't stupid, Police wouldn't have jobs, and we wouldn't have any crime shows!moreless
  • The Truth in the Myth...

After being consistently underwhelming of late Bones really needed the pick up that it gave itself with this week's "The Truth in the Myth". When the remains of a myth-buster television show host are found in the wilderness appearing to have been killed by the mythic Chupacabra, a reptile-mammal hybrid creature whose existence has not been confirmed, the team must work to uncover the reality of the situation.

With both skeptics and true believers working on the case the plausibility of myths is a subject broached whilst the usual forensics of the case are undergone. At the same time, recovering alcoholic squint Vincent Nigel-Murray makes amends with each member of the team as part of his ninth step. This particular addition is what made the episode stand out as being much more entertaining than the show has been recently, delivering genuine laugh out loud moments at the sheer awkwardness of the situation.

There's the usual dummy suspects including an animal psychic and a cryptozoologist to throw us humorously off the trail of the real killer, but ultimately after just a little bit more science the Jeffersonian team prove that it was in fact a human killer, not a mythical one. A hunting accident followed by a ploy to amp up business for a failing hotel is what ultimately resulted in the seemingly bizarre death and gave a somewhat obvious but acceptable end to a reasonable mystery.

As I said before "The Truth in the Myth" was by far one of the best episodes of Bones that has made it to the screen recently and even though I have a strong suspicion that I won't be rewarded for my prayers, I hope that the remainder of the season seeks to emulate this light-hearted comedy with a little murder-mystery on the side. If however the writers decide that they would like to be a dull as they can possibly be, they will just keep on with their otherwise winning formula.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • During a conversation in the car, Brennan and Booth talk about Lee Coleman and Brennan does not know who he was. Booth says Bones doesn't have a TV. She says she does, but it is in the closet. This might give the impression that she is not watching TV at all (stated many times in previous episodes). It was well established earlier this season, however, in the Maggots in the Meathead that Bones watched a "documentary" or rather reality show about a subculture of "Guidos."

    • Goof: When Vincent is apologizing to Brennan, she walks away and is seen standing with her back to Vincent. In the next shot (with Brennan close-up) she is obviously facing Vincent.

    • Goof: Angela claims to have boosted the audio-recording above the Nyquist-frequency. On the one hand this is very unlikely since most digital-cameras use some sort of video and audio-compression, so frequencies a human can not hear would not have been recorded by the camera. On the other hand, the Nyquist-frequency is the resolution-limit of a frequency-based encoding of an audio-sample, which actually says, the sampling-frequency must be at least the double of the maximum frequency to be properly encoded (Shannon-theorem: f_s >= 2 * f_Nyquist). Therefore, even boosting the recording as Angela claims would not reveal any extra audio-information since it would simply not have been recorded.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Hodgins: This seems to be shaping up to be nothing more than a hoax.
Saroyan: Don't sound so sad. Do you really want to live in a world where chupacabras run free?
      Hodgins: Yes, I really do.

    • Booth: Look, shouldn't there be more blood?
Brennan: Yes, it-it appears all of the blood has been drained from the victim's body.
      Booth: I'm guessing psycho …
Brennan: But look at the ribs, two through six, on the left side.
      Hodgins: Bite marks.
      Booth: Cannibal?
Brennan: No. It-it's not human dentition.
      Booth: I'm confused.
Brennan: Me, too, a-and I don't like the feeling.

    • Brennan: Okay, what is your point?
Booth: Well, that things are confusing, okay? Just because you can explain something doesn't mean that it's explainable.
      Brennan: Do you mean explicable?
Booth: Sure, like us. We don't make any sense at all.

    • Booth: (toasting) Here's to stupidity and greed, the two elements that keep us employed.

    • Hodgins: She shot him accidentally?
Booth: Well, she actually said it was his own fault for not wearing an orange vest in the woods.
Angela: This is why I'm against hunting.
      Cam: Not because of Bambi?
Angela: All right, mostly because of Bambi.

    • Booth: So, our friend the animal psychic has an alibi.
Brennan: (laughs) Don't tell me. She was feeding a flock of pigeons in the park, and they're all willing to testify.
      Booth: Close, counseling a horse.

    • Angela: You really had to volunteer us for this, huh?
Hodgins: Yeah! Thought coming out to the woods would be nice, you know? Little fresh air.
Angela: Honey, let me share something with you. There's a human growing inside me. Vegging on the couch and eating pints of mint-chip ice cream is all I actually want to do.
Hodgins: Recent studies show that mothers who gain excess weight during pregnancy make their babies more prone to childhood obesity.
Angela: Oh. That's interesting. I read a study that says that husbands who suggest their pregnant wives are fat are far more prone to being slugged by them.
