This episode has it all - a clever crime, Booth and Bones moments, and the dark humor that makes "Bones" great. But I think the ending scene in this episode is what makes "The Wannnabe in the Weeds" absolutely brilliant. Brennan finally lets herself go because Booth persuades her to. It almost seems like a challenge to her - I love the look that she gives him before throwing off her coat and diving right into the situation - and she goes for it. She really gets into it, too. She's clearly having a good time, laughing and jumping and dancing, and at this moment that Brennan completely lets herself go, and lets herself go because of Booth, everything goes wrong. This one moment where she is completely vulnerable, everything gets taken away, which I think must be a mirror to her childhood when her parents and brother left her. Another great thing about this scene is how Booth could not take his eyes off of Brennan. Everyone else in the scene is laughing and dancing and having a good time with each other, but Booth is sitting at his table, completely absorbed with watching - he's dancing and laughing too, but he never takes his eyes off of her. The moment when Booth gets shot, and Brennan rushes to her side is also a great moment, and shows how much they care for each other. All the other people are shocked, but Brennan rushes to Booth's side, and shoots Fat Pam without a moment's hesitation. Although the reason for her shooting may look and partially be because Fat Pam was pointing the gun at Brennan, Brennan also shot her as an act of passion because she was the one who shot Booth. The moment when Booth grips Brennan's hand tightly, although as to stay with her, and his blood seeps through her other hand is amazing. Fat Pam was an incredible character. She was so creepy yet so oblivious to the world. What makes her worse is that there are definitely the obsessive type out in the world just like her, and people may not realize their danger. This was a great episode.moreless
  • One of my favorite episodes of Bones! It really shows the dynamic that is the Booth/Brennan partnership.

I just have to say that this is an amazing episode! Unlike a lot of people who have mentioned it, I thought the singing was a fabulous edition to the episode. I always enjoy a good preview of the victim before they die, and this was a perfect one. I enjoyed the fact that the casting director chose to hire some ex-American Idol stars to sing.

Although I thought that the idea of the neighbor being the killer a little thin, but I guess it was okay. The actor that they hired to play him wasn't the best, but the rest of this amazing episode is what kept me from lowering the rating of this episode.

All I can say about the last scene is wow! Emily Dechanel is an amazing singer! I wish she could've finished the song, but the plot line of Booth getting shot was also amazing. This last scene really shows how much Brennan cares about Booth. Booth also showed how much he cares about Brennan by not being able to take his eyes off of her. The only thing that could have made this scene better was if they had told each other that they love each other, but I loved this scene so much that I don't care. Amazing scene that I have watched so many times that I have memorized it.

Let me just say that Zach's singing blew me away! He really surprised me with it. I later learned that it was Eric Milegan's (Zach) real singing and I was even more pleasantly surprised. I very much enjoyed this episode and look forward to seeing it again and again.moreless
  • A great episode, but poor, poor booth. Spoilers inside.

A nice twist, bringing some American idol contestants into it. I was a fan of Ace while he was on the show. I adored all the references booth said about American idol. Brennan didn't understand it at all. "Because of you", "thank you Paula" and "everyone thinks they are the next Kelly Clarkson" were a great addition to the show and brought out humor.

The case was nice, but the killer didn't seem like the killing type. He was right though, the alarm clock was annoying. Extremely annoying. It would have been nice to see Booth shoot another inanimate object and save us all from hearing the "beep, beep, beep" The episode seemed to highlight on booth and his stalker, foreshadowing what was to come at the end. The lady was flat out creepy, but it was no surprise that she ended up stalking a gorgeous man like Booth.

The ending was sweet, when Brennan got up and sang Girls just want to have fun. Emily Deschanel was not that bad of a singer, and I read in an article that she had to try and sound bad. With the promise of Sweets saying he would have sung as well was a nice touch to the episode.. I really want to hear him sing lime in the coconut. Brennan sounded so concerned at the end when booth was shot. Despite the situation, it was a sweet moment. I have seen the following episode, but it does really make you want to watch it right away. I have to wait until monday, the day it is scheduled to show on TNT. The joys of summer season, reruns of bones on for 2-3 hours a day.

I adored this episode, and the fact that it brought up the subject of socks. You really need to watch it. An over all great episode, one of the best of the season. The rating show that as well, this was an amazing episode. Watch it.moreless
  • Almost a 10 . . . but . . . (spoilers)

    9.5
I really liked this episode, except I was very dissatisfied with the resolution of the murder case. The reason for the neighbor killing him was so weak. It's not impossible, but the way the actor played it, I didn't believe it. He said his neighbor was driving him crazy with all his singing, but the killer didn't at all seem crazy. The way the killer described it, saying he didn't mean to do it, was ridiculous, because how do you accidentally strangle someone with a wire? He said he was just trying to scare his neighbor, but generally strangling someone with a wire is not a good scare tactic. Not that we're supposed to believe him necessarily, but I just was annoyed by the weakness of the motive and the fact that the killer didn't at all act crazy. I'm sorry, but you've got to be a little nuts to kill your noisy neighbor. Thankfully, Bones is one of the few shows in this genre whose quality is not entirely dependent on the crime being investigated and its resolution.moreless
  • AWESOME!

This is why I love this show so much... This episode was f****** excellent!!!!! It was full of excitement and laughs. Things can't get better than this... I know the show will keep this up.

I liked seeing Bones having a bit fun and the team gathered again, it has been a long time since last time. The funniest moment was when Hodgins barged into the interogation room and interrupted it all! Hahaha, what a fun moment.

And the shocking ending was so unexpected and so sad:( Booth getting shot was so dramatic, but I know he's not going to die... GREAT EPISODE!moreless

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • Goof: In the scene where the squints are reenacting Tommy's death, Cam's hair is up. However, when she says the throat and trachea were sliced, her hair is down. In the next shot, her hair is up again.

    • Goof: In the very last shot of the episode, from Booth's point of view Brennan's hair is wavy/curly. However, in the rest of the scene her hair is clearly straight.

    • Goof: As Booth is lying on the ground he's holding Brennan's left hand. When Brennan goes to wrap her left arm around him, her hand is free, but immediately back in his hand when the shot switches.

    • Goof: In the very last scene when Pam shoots Booth, Booth drops his gun and it falls to the floor. When he first drops the gun it is to the left of the screen, almost under a chair and far away from Brennan. As Pam goes to shoot Brennan and Brennan reaches for Booth's gun to defend herself, it has been conveniently placed beside her for her to grab.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Zach: My parents felt that singing lessons would help integrate me socially.
      Hodgins: Really?
Zach: Yes. I was quite good. I received acclaim and a new stature amongst the parents of my peers.
Hodgins: What about your actual peers?
Zach: My mother said they were jealous and not to worry about it.

    • Brennan: ... you are a superb agent.
      Booth: You think?
Brennan: Yeah, of course. Since I am the best in my field, it would be self-destructive for me to work with someone who's beneath me.
Booth: Oh, okay ... well, that's good, 'cause, you know, I have to be honest here. Sometimes I think you feel that you're better than me.
Brennan: Well, objectively I'm more intelligent ...
      Booth: There we go ...
Brennan: ... in certain areas, and in others I understand my limitations and I admire your expertise.
      Booth: Oh. You admire me?
Brennan: In certain areas of expertise.
Booth: Well, I admire your expertise. You know, the whole science thing.
Brennan: Thank you. I'm an author too.
      Booth: I know.
Brennan: Best-selling, that also gives me an elevated status.
      Booth: Here goes the ego.
Brennan: No, I'm not saying that society's correct to elevate me, I'm not saying that I deserve the elevation, I'm just saying that it occurs. Society should elevate scholars and teachers, not actors and athletes.
      Booth: Yeah, what about cops?
      Brennan: Yeah, they're very important.

    • Pam: If he didn't love me, why would he give me this bracelet? P-A-M, do you know what that spells?
      Booth: ... Pam.
      Pam: That's right.

    • Adam Matthews: Then about a month ago, she showed up in the middle of the night, and started banging on the door.
      Booth: Oh, was she angry?
Adam Matthews: She was wearing a teddy, and high heels. So I'm thinking angry wasn't her emotion.
Brennan: You're implying she was sexually stimulated.
Booth: So were they um ... ? (claps his hands) You know. Did they ... ? (claps again)
Brennan: Did they have sexual intercourse?
Adam Matthews: If they did it was through a locked door.
      Brennan: So ... no?
Booth: (clapping) Very good, Bones. Okay, let's go.

    • Bones: So he was killed, decapitated, and mulched. Wow, can't be worse for this guy.

    • Booth: (about the people at the gym) These people here are just trying to be healthy, Bones.
Bones: There is a fine line between health and vanity.

    • Bones: How does a former sniper have a grass allergy? Wouldn't a sneeze give away your position?
Booth: Bones, okay, I worked in the desert. Sand, no grass.

    • Bones: The guitar string could definitely be the murder weapon.
Booth: Cause it cut the cheese?

    • Bones: Does Tommy share your affection?
Pam: Why do you ask it like that? Because I don't look like a scarecrow? (to Booth) Like her?
Bones: Hey. Wha- what are you coming after me for? (to Booth) Do- do I look like a scarecrow?

    • Brennan: Until I was thirteen I wanted to be the next Cyndi Lauper.
Booth: I'd say you're kidding but I don't think you know how to kid.
Brennan: The other girls and I referred to her as rad. (laughs) My mother said I sang just as well.
Booth: As well as Cyndi Lauper?
      Brennan: Yes.
Sweets: Mothers do that. It's healthy.
Brennan: No it wasn't just flattery. My mother told me I sang "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" better than she did. (Booth Laughs)
Sweets: It was an expression of affection Dr. Brennan. Not an objective evaluation of your abilities.
Brennan: Well, I think you're wrong.
Booth: Okay then, go ahead, belt it out.
      Brennan: No!
Sweets: Yeah, come on give us a few bars.
      Booth: Come on ...
Brennan: I can't just burst into song. I have to have music and an appropriate atmosphere of frivolity.
Booth: Diva, forensic genius, best-selling author, better than Cyndi Lauper ...

    • Brennan: (watching an amateur sing) This guy is good.
Booth: Thank you Paula ... just focus here.

    • Brennan: Well Dr. Sweets still thinks she's the killer.
Sweets: Dangerous. I think she's dangerous.
      Booth: I agree.
      Sweets: Thank you Agent Booth.
Booth: All those gifts, and taking pictures from a distance and showing up in the middle of the night in a nightie is all very dangerous.

    • Sweets: She has body issues, which are not congruent with her actual appearance. She's someone who's slightly large, who believes she's a very large woman who can convince people she's only slightly large. And the way they treat her convinces her that she's right.
      Bones: That's interesting.
Sweets: See, you're only pretending it's interesting. It means very little to you.
      Bones: That's true.

    • Sweets: Mocking will not change my opinion. I have been mocked many, many times before.
(Booth and Bones exchange a look)
      Sweets: That came out wrong.

    • Booth: Everybody thinks they're the next Kelly Clarkson.
      Bones: Who's Kelly Clarkson?
Booth: American Idol ... "Because of You"?
      Bones: Because of me?

    • Bones: Hey! Break down the door!
Booth: It hurts my shoulder when I break down the door!

    • Zack: My regimen is easily completed in my apartment. Treadmill for 30 minutes, 100 sit-ups, push-ups and leg-lifts, and then 20 minutes of free weights. I'm deceptively strong.
      Cam: I am deceived!

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Booth: American Idol. "Because of You"?

This is a reference to the reality TV show American Idol and one of the songs written and sung by the winner of the show's first season, Kelly Clarkson.

    • Booth: Everybody thinks they're the next Kelly Clarkson.

This is a reference to the winner of the first season of the reality show American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, who has been one of the most successful Idol contestants in the show's history.

    • Booth: Thank you Paula.

Paula Abdul is one of the judges on American Idol, a reality show where people compete to win a singing contest with a one million dollar record deal with a major label as the prize. Paula's comments for each Idol singer are almost always the nicest. In this Bones episode Booth is suggesting to Bones that she is too easy on the Checkerbox contestants.
