  • Notes

    • The famous Pony Express from St Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA was discontinued prior to the Civil War due to the completion of the overland telegraph after only 18 months in operation, but offshoots of the express sprang up in areas where no telegraph was available. Buffalo Bill Cody claimed to have ridden for the express, but there are no documents to confirm this. According to the Pony Express Museum in St Joseph, Wild Bill Hickock was never a rider. He worked as a stable hand in the Rock Creek, NE station.
