Episode Summary

It Girls and Beyond
Brad becomes attracted to his client who is being sued for having a relationship with her boss merely for financial purposes. To make matters more difficult, Brad convinces himself that she is lying about being a lesbian. Alan is asked to second chair on Denny's trial case where a doctor is being sued for prescribing a drug that has not been FDA approved. While working on that, Denny is on a personal mission to prove that he is a competent attorney. Meanwhile, the staff tries to deal with Alan's out-spoken new assistant, Catherine Piper.moreless

  • Denny Crane!

After two fairly average episodes, this was a return to form for Boston Legal. The episode was both funny and dramatic.

It was nice to see Brad have a good case to sink his teeth into (the It-Girl was very pretty, on a side note!), and also refreshing to show him as not quite being the blustering fool that the rest of the staff seem to treat him as. Brad's determination to find out the truth was well acted, and the case itself was fairly interesting, as well as combined with some good humour- especially at the "lesbian" calling at the beginning. I am also loving Alan's new assistant- she was very funny! "Don't you have an interesting face!"- loving it!

Denny's case was also interesting, and it was good seeing the darker side to him as he takes drugs to help him perform. His clash with Paul was brilliantly written, and also very dramatic- I have been able to work out if I like Paul or not. The scene was very poignant though. The case he was involved in was brilliantly written, and covered some good grounds- Denny's closing is one of my favourites of Season 1. It was also a lovely balcony scene at the end of the episode, as Alan and Denny enjoy their understated (at this time) friendship.

Overall, a brilliant episode, one of my all time favourites.moreless

    • Catherine: Cookies everyone! Nourishment is most important in the morning.
      Paul: Who is this woman?
Catherine: Take two Tara, you're a rail.

Catherine: Brad Chase? You're defending a lesbian!
Lori: Hi! I'm Lori Colson, we haven't officially met.
      Catherine: Hello dear. Catherine Piper.
Lori: For the future. I don't really appreciate comments about my hair.
Catherine: Oh! I'm sorry. I was just trying to make conversation. And I assumed you wouldn't want me to go anywhere near your eyebrows.

    • Jeff Rake is again listed as an executive producer at the end of the show despite his departure after episode 10. This episode (or at least parts of it) was written as part of the early season. It was put into production and casting went out back in late July under the title "It Girls", but for some reason the episode was pushed back and retooled. It is not clear whether or not some of the scenes involving the "It Girls" storyline were filmed beforehand or not.

    • Rene Auberjonois is added to the opening credits.
