This episode introduced us to the excellent Clark Brown, who is one of my favourite judges in this show. Alan's clash with him was easily the best part of this storyline, and his manipulation of him will be key to Crane, Poole and Schmit's future cases.

It also led to further confrontation between Alan and Paul, which adds a dramatic element to the show, which is a must. Furthermore, it led to a very nice scene with Denny and Alan, where Denny tells Alan he wants him to stay.

Lori's storyline wasn't brilliant this time. Although it rasied ethical dilemnas, and was nicely solved by Alan, it really felt a bit like a drag, which is a pity because it was an excellent episode.

Nevertheless, it was picked up with Denny's humourous storyline about wanting to have sex with a one legged woman! The scene where Alan rants to the judge, and Denny simply says "Why would I pull over to the side of the road" was hilarious- the chemistry between Shatner and Spader is one of the best I have ever seen! The ending was a nice touch as well.

Overall, the first Season continues to impress with back to back consistancy, and a good range of storylines.moreless

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • In the scene where Judge Brown's mother is in the courtroom, in one shot, there is a boom mike visible above Alan's head for a fraction of a second.

    • When Paul leaves the room filled with the judges the camera moves towards him. It then goes back to Alan and behind him you see the table where the judges sat, but there are no judges there.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Alan: I'm giving notice. I believe two weeks is standard. Now step aside, Paul, before I push you to the ground and go to the bathroom on you.

    • Alan: Oh, dear. Am I in trouble?
Lori: Let me guess. You send my client to a mob doctor working in the back room of some underworld casino you frequent.
Alan: I'm sorry to say the reality is far less colorful, but I applaud your imagination.

    • Paul: (to Lori) Well, as you know, my personal policy is always to remove bullets immediately after I'm shot.

    • Judge Brown: Do you know what my mother would call you? A namby-pamby. Weak and spineless, bellyaching about some trumped up medical excuse.

    • Judge Lang: This is highly unusual Mr. Shore. Seeking to discipline a judge for imposing a sentence your client agreed to.
Alan: I suspect we'd all agree to a good beating in order to avoid a prison sentence but your honors we are not in Singapore.

    • Denny: Hell if I had a nickel for every woman I'd promise to marry in exchange for sex…actually I do.

    • Judge Brown: I don't like this. Your office gets behind, so you just let criminals walk?
Alan: It's reassuring to see that you haven't formed any conclusions about my client's guilt or innocence.
Judge Brown: You know what my mother always says? "If it smells funny, I'm not eating it."
Alan: Exact opposite of my motto.
