Peter MacNicol (Dr. Sydney Field) makes his second appearance in a David E. Kelley program.
He previously acted in Ally McBeal as John Cage.
Denny: I'll take over from here.
Alan: Don't you dare! And don't shoot anybody!
Denny: Oh, please...
Denise: Tell me exactly what happened.
Brad: I told you. I was on a date. It was a terrific date.
Denise: With another woman? Where do you find all these women, anyway?
Brad: I'm a lawyer. I was a marine. Just do the math. I'm the complete package.
Melissa: You and I are in a relationship, Alan. The fact that you don't realize it, doesn't give you license to be unfaithful.
Alan: You're mad as a hatter.
Melissa: When two people sleep together...
Alan: That was a night terror thing.
Melissa: I'm talking about the sex.
Alan: What sex?
Melissa: The sex you and I both know it's coming.
Denny: It's total self defense. After I threatened to kill him, the bastard threatened to kill me. It's not right...
Chelina: Alan, the last time we worked together I kissed you.
Alan: Really? I've forgotten. You'll have to refresh me on that.
Alan: I couldn't help but overhear, which is so often the case when people shout...
Denny: Talk to me, Sidney. What are you thinking?
Dr. Field: I think you're bored, Denny.
Denny: Bored? How can I be bored? I'm Denny Crane. Even the sound of my name fascinates. More Sidney, more about me.
Dr. Field: I didn't shoot before Denny, but I will this time. I really will.
Denny: Sydney, I did it once don't make me do it again.
Dr. Field: With what?
Denny: This! (takes out his gun and fires)
Alan: You said you'd never so much as look at a gun again.
Denny: I never said I wouldn't shoot one.
Denny: Canada, Japan, England. Any number of those pinko countries. I'd be in jail for shooting somebody.
Alan: God bless America.
Brad: I was wondering if I could join you and Denny on the balcony sometime. Just trying to diversify my life with some male bonding and I was wondering...you know.
Alan: Brad, any gathering of three or more men always seems like a team to me and I've never been much of a team player so if you're going to show count me out. (pause. stare.) Was there something specific you'd like to talk about?
Brad: Are you a good kisser?
Judge Paul Resnick: I've had enough of all this. Mr. Crane, you've had no excuse to be carrying a gun.
Denny: 2nd Amendment. Founding Fathers. You probably knew them.
Melissa (about Chelina): Don't fall for her, Alan. She's just a guest star.
Chelina: God, the last time I saw you...
Alan: I think it was a Sunday, then I was taken off the air, you went off to do movies and I got switched to Tuesdays and...
Chelina: Here we are... with old footage.
Original International Air Dates:
Slovakia: October 12, 2010 on JOJ
When Alan Shore first sees Chelina Hall, he quips that when he last saw her they were on Sunday nights, then they were canceled for a while an now they're on Tuesday nights. In reality, this is what happened to the show "Boston Legal" itself. It debuted on Sunday nights after "Desperate Housewives", but was put on hiatus when "Grey's Anatomy" proved to draw higher ratings in the same time slot. In Fall, it returned to Tuesday nights.
This episode was originally intended to air as episode 18 of Season 1. When the season was cut short due to the success of Grey's Anatomy, the last 5 episodes of the season were held back until Season 2. For unknown reasons, Race Ipsa wasn't aired at the beginning of the season but instead held until near the end of Season 2, with a completely reworked story to eliminate the old characters and integrate the new ones.
Dr. Field: Anytime he doesn't like what he hears, yes, it's Dirty Harry time.
Dirty Harry is a 1971 crime film produced and directed by Don Siegel. It is the first film in the Dirty Harry series. Clint Eastwood plays the title role, in his role as San Francisco Police Department Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan.
Brad: I mean, a kiss is just a kiss, right? It's what the stupid song says.
Brad is referring to the song As Time Goes By written by Herman Hupfeld in 1931, which was later sang by John Lennon with the name A Kiss is Just a Kiss (As Time Goes By).
In this episode's first dialogue between Alan and Chelina, they break character to alert the audience that they are using clips filmed during the first season and that since they last interacted (in the first season), Alan has changed nights (as Boston Legal did in season two) and Chelina (Kerry Washington) has started working in movies.
An allusion to the legal term "res ipsa loquitur" which means "the thing speaks for itself".
Denny: (about shooting his therapist) Thought he was a quail.
This is a joking reference to Vice-President Dick Cheney, who made the news in an incident where he shot a friend while hunting for quail.
