The title of this episode is a reference to the film "Tea and Sympathy" (1956). The film is about a young boy whose lack of interest in the "manly" pursuits of sports, mountain climbing and girls labels him "sister-boy" at the college he is attending.
When Alan is quizzing Judge Weldon about how many men she has slept with, he wonders if she is "one of Mitt's wives". He is referring to Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a practicing Mormon and a Republican candidate for President in 2008. Many Americans believe that Mormon church doctrine advocates a man having multiple wives, although Romney and the church deny such. At this point Judge Weldon breaks the fourth wall and tells Alan "he'll get letters" about the comment.
