Basically this episode carrys on from last weeks. Katie has still got a big murder trial on her hands and Alan is still being pressed for an answer as to whether he is ready to become a father yet. But ultimatley he decides that he would make a poor father and says no ending his relationship with the judge. Katie and Jerry successfully win the trial after a powerful closing from Jerry. And perhaps what i enjoyed most was Denny finding out about Shirley and Carl. What is he going to do about it? Well it was nice to still have Brad around and it appears that Denise will come back. So far i am really loving this season and i hope it stays this good.

As the conclusion to the trial that began in the season opener, this episode did wonderfully. It continued to make the necessary points and show light on what is often an injustice in the American Justice system. Using the new characters in this case that almost seemed tailor made for Alan Shore was a different and interesting choice. Not...not that Christian Clemenson's character of Jerry Espenson is new, but he still rarely gets the really tough cases. It was interesting putting both of these seemingly weak characters into this boiler of a case. I think they came through okay, with Alan as mentor (and a particularly cranky mentor at that.) The further introduction of this new Lorraine character sets up some new possibilities, though it may have been more interesting to watch Alan try to settle down (Jerry's comment to Alan was touching and heartfelt...)



What boggled my mind, as far as this episode is concerned, since we're still in character introduction mode Carl Sack had all of one scene in the episode and I can't recall if he had any lines or not. Please, let's not get into underusing the new characters this early in the season! Surely the stories could be broken a little better to let everyone have a little more to do. All in all, a solid episode with a few annoying growing pains...but this is the fourth season premiere, we're used to the cast changes by now, but that doesn't mean we have to like them.

Finally, Alan comes to terms with the whole Gloria wanting his baby situation.

I liked the scene between Alan and Jerry, where Jerry tells him what he would think of him being a father, that really seemed to have an effect on what Alan planned afterwards when he spoke with Gloria.

Denny starts hitting on Lorraine knowing that she is having an affair with Alan and this did get Alan mad, but that's just Denny in a nutshell.

The best part of the episode was at the end when Alan reveals Shirley's little secret, and even though he is guessing (he's also right) it was sad to see how Denny reacted. He still loves Shirley.

A good episode, it wasn't one of those funny episodes, it was a normal episode where there were a few changes at the ending and the big case was closed with the help of Alan.
