  • James Coburn and Richard Chamberlain

I've watched close to half the episodes of Bourbon Street Beat and Target of Hate is easily the best of the one's I've viewed thus far. Much of the reason is the performances of the two main guest stars, James Coburn and Richard Chamberlain. Both men would later go onto greater things as thespians but you get good glimpses here of their tremendous talents when they were just beginning in Hollywood.

Coburn and Chamberlain play two assassins who takeover the office of New Orleans private eyes Rex Randolph and Cal Calhoun in order to assassinate a prominent politician who's making a speech at a nearby banquet hall. The office makes an ideal location for a sniper and thus it's taken over. All of the show's major characters are taken hostage and they must sweat out the wait until the killing is to take place. Their only hope is to try and turn the two killers against each other.

Chamberlain's character is perhaps the deeper and more fascinating of the two. He's a young man who's driven for vengeance against the politician whom he blames for driving his father to suicide. In reality, he's nothing but a patsy for Coburn's character, a mob assassin who's there to make sure the job gets done. The character of Coburn appears to have ice water in his veins but we soon learn differently. He handles his job and who he is by drinking heavily. Perhaps to hear that click in his head so that he can stand himself and his profession.

So if you ever decide to order DVDs of the nearly forgotten Bourbon Street Beat be sure to watch Target of Hate first. You might be let down by some of the lesser episodes of the series but you'll enjoy some first rate suspense featuring two future stars who show here that they'll soon be at the top of their game.moreless
