Its Career Day at John Adams High, when parents come in and tell the students what they do for a living. When all the other parents have interesting careers, Cory's father, Alan, feels that his career as a grocer is unimportant and lackluster. His presentation bores the class, he is embarrassed and so is Cory.
While Cory and Shawn are at lunch, Shawn's dad, Chet, barges in. He tells Shawn that his mother, Virna, has run away. This isn't the first time but this time she took their mobile home with her.
Chet plans to go after her and leaves Shawn behind. When Mr. Turner finds out that Shawn is staying at a cheap motel he invites him to stay in his apartment. However, he has to reconsider when Mr. Feeny warns him about crossing the authority-figure/friend line.
Cory and his parents tell Shawn that he can stay with them while his father is away. Cory, realizing his fathers presence in his life, reminds Alan that being a good father is more important than the job he holds.
Meanwhile, Eric is consumed in studying for the SAT.
