  • where dad went wrong

if i was cory's parents here, i would tell him that it was HIS mess up, and that HE would fix it and that he was grounded until he did so. he would have grown up to be a better person. sometimes things happen in life that we don't want, but we have to suck it up and deal with it. what did he learn here, that if he is to stressed he will get help? that don't always happen in real lifemoreless

Cory wants to have money for an expensive water gun. But he has to work for it, so he does various jobs for Mr. Feeny, in his garden. In the end he gets one, but after seeing how hard his dad works, he gets one for his dad so his dad can "experience childhood again." This was a pretty decent episode of the show. It's not one of the funniest or one of their all-time greats but it was pretty good. Shawn had some really good lines in this one I thought and everyone was in character {which they usually are}.moreless
  • Good.

This was an excellent episode showing the responsiblilities of a young Cory Matthews as he makes his way on his journey through life. I really enjoyed watching this episode on dvd/tv. I really think this episode should've been the pilot episode. I think why I like it so well is because, it shows Cory going through an everyday life experince. This is very real for kids his age to want something really bad and end up working for it. It also shows there's goanna be mistakes, for instance, the shutter mess. I like how it show'd how the relationship between the family was going to be. This episode was a perfect start for the series. I think it will be a great one that shows Life Lessons.moreless

  • One of my favorites!

Cory wants a water gun for the water war. He learns responsibility and to just be a kid. He paints Mr. Feeny’s shutters to earn $58. Eric hates work. This was probably the first episode I remember seeing. I really think this was one of the better season 1 episodes! Minkus was hilarious and super smart. I think it was cool how Cory realized his father did so much and Cory did so little. Alan told Cory to stay 11 years old as long as he can because soon, he’ll have to work and have many responsibilities. I thought it was funny when Mr. Feeny offered $80, but Cory did the math wrong and thought it was $58. It was nice of Cory to do loosen his family up by squirting them! I really like this episode! It gets a 10!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Cory: What a major freakoid that Ed Poe must have been.
Mr. Feeny: You have no idea how major a freakoid.

Edgar Allan Poe was famous for writing dark poems and short stories. He married his 13 year old cousin, and was said to have had multiple diseases and personality disorders.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Cory (to Alan): Shutter marks still showed after one coat. Had to borrow from mom to buy more paint for second coat. I work two days, painted 16 shutters and a fence. Know how much money I made? I owe eight bucks.

    • Cory: Come on Mr. Feeny, have some pity. I've been out of work for eleven years!

    • Morgan (dialing the phone): Nine, one, one. Hello? Yes, I'm stuck here and I can't get down. My parents are outside fighting. Listen. (holds phone towards the backyard)
Mr. Feeny (heard from the backyard): You're drowning my floribundas!
Morgan: They just shot the neighbor! (waits for response) Hold on. Let me ask. (shouting to the backyard) Mommy, what's our address?!

    • Cory: Dad, nobody likes a whiner. Now, I need a job.
Alan: You need to be a kid.
      Cory: I don't wanna be a kid.
Alan: Well, that's too bad, because once it's gone you can never get it back.
Cory: I wanna be able to afford stuff!
      Alan: So do I!

    • Feeny: Alan, my father was a firm believer in hard work. He worked me from sun-up to sundown. Look how I turned out.
Alan (to Cory): I don't want you working anymore.

    • Alan: What's he want this time?
Amy: A fifty dollar squirt gun.
Alan: A fifty dollar squirt gun!? No really, what's he want.
Cory: Dad, we're not talking an ordinary squirt gun. We're talking the Hydrosat 3000Z. It's the big boy on the block.
Alan: That's nice Cor. Pretty steep though, maybe for Christmas.
Cory: Hey great, a water gun in December. I'll be the little boy spreading pneumonia.

    • Cory: Dollars!? Get a pulse! Five bucks to paint all those? Mr. Feeny: Five dollars a piece Mr. Matthews. That's five times two shutters times eight windows. Cory: 5 x 2 x 8... What's that... like 58 bucks? Mr. Feeny (smiling): $58 it is. You are worth every inch of that C+ I gave you in math. Cory: Thanks, Mr. Feeny, you won't regret it! Mr. Feeny: Oh, I expect I shall...

    • Cory: What, do all women have antennas hidden somewhere on their bodies?
Eric: I dunno. None of them will let me look.

  • NOTES (1)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Minkus: Go ahead, make me wet.

This is a reference to a quote from the movie Sudden Impact:

Harry Callahan: Go ahead, make my day.

    • Ellis:It'll blow your head clean off.

This is a reference to a classic line in the movie Dirty Harry:

Harry: I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
