Everyone is upset after the prank war goes too far but nobody is willing to work out the problem. Eric has Mr. Feeny step in and he keeps them after class one day and tells them that cannot leave until they are all friends again. Every time someone makes a suggestion or comment another argument breaks out. Mr. Feeny tells everyone to write down things that they like about each other. Rachel finally comes out and tells everyone that she just feels like an outsider. Unlike the rest of the crew, who all have connections to each other, whether it is boyfriend and girlfriend, best friend, or brother, but Rachel doesn't have any of those connections to anyone in the group. She is so upset by this that she gets up and heads for the door.
We see into the future to observe what the crew will be like if they go their separate ways. It's 2006 and everyone is at Mr. Feeny's retirement party. Cory and Topanga are still married and have a daughter, but also attend marriage counseling. Jack is a wealthy businessman, but despite his power and money, he is lonely. Shawn and Angela find out that they both went into the same field, as journalists. Rachel informs everyone that she moved to Texas and married her ex-boyfriend, but is now divorced with two children. Eric is a strange man who has lived alone, and changed his name to Plays With Squirrels. The crew stands there facing the awkwardness of not speaking to each other in over seven years.
Time shifts back to the present where the crew still has unresolved issues. When Rachel walks out the door, Eric goes after her and carries her back into the classroom. He sits on her and tells her how much he enjoys being around her and that he values her friendship. Eric is the only one who wrote anything down and he hands Rachel his piece of paper as she reads his words: Lose one friend, lose all friends, lose yourself. It seems that Eric's words alone are enough to make everyone realize how selfish they are acting. They all join Rachel and Eric on the floor and finally make up.
