Cory is getting bored watching chick-flicks with Topanga and his mom. He's making muffins and preserves, and using words like "wisenheimer". He knows he loves Topanga, but he feels that their relationship is in a horrible, boring rut.
Shawn encourages Cory to go with him to a dance at another school. He is reluctant at first, but when Topanga informs him that she has plans with her girl friends, he feels more comfortable about going.
Thinking it will help Cory have a good time, Shawn allows Cory to pretend to be him at the dance. It works and all the girls want attention from Cory because they think he is Shawn. When Shawn tells him about a hot french girl "from some place in Europe", Cory decides to try and talk to her.
He finally finds her but when she turns around, he discovers that she's Topanga.
They go outside to talk. They're in a rut; there's just no mystery anymore. They decide that it's a good idea to break up quickly so they don't end up hating each other in the end. They both leave.
Moments later, Topanga comes running back but Cory is gone. She leaves, visibly upset. Cory also returns to the scene but by then Topanga has left.
Meanwhile, Eric decides it's finally time to start studying; but he's left his books at school. When he goes in to get them, he discovers the teachers in the midst of a friendly poker game. He tells them that if they let him play until he loses, he'll go home and study; but he keeps winning. When a bowl of pretzel sticks falls on the floor, he immediately counts them; revealing that he is some sort of savant. Dr. Sorrell tries to get him to go gambling with him.
