Eric is on a date at Chubbie's with a girl, Kelly, who is impressed with his sensitivity and listening skills. He asks her on a third date, which Kelly sees as a start to something serious. He expresses interest in continuing to get to know her, so she invites him to her apartment. Eric is excited, but he sees just how serious things are when Kelly introduces him to her six-year-old son, Ryan.
Eric feels that he's ready for a more mature relationship, and he surprises Kelly by coming back the next day. Kelly, who's used to guys bailing when they meet her son, seems happy with Eric. He's good with Ryan, he says all the right things and he's pretty cute.
Meanwhile, Cory, Shawn and Topanga are studying for the SAT. Shawn is having particular trouble, often getting "thinking cramps" when a difficult question is posed. He eventually crawls out the window in need of a break. Eric walks in and gives the correct answer to the last question Cory posed; a credit to him taking the SAT six or seven times. Cory says that Eric should try again, but Eric declines. He's happy where he is, with his new job and new relationship.
Eric spends the next day with Ryan, and the two return to Chubbie's to unwind. Cory, Shawn and Topanga show up and ask him to join them for a game of pool. Eric wants to play, but Ryan seems disappointed. Eric promises to be quick, and gives Ryan money for ice cream. A few moments later, Eric calls to Ryan to watch a shot he's about to take; but he turns around to realize Ryan has disappeared.
At Kelly's apartment, Eric is talking about getting angry with Ryan, when he found him outside of Chubbie's, sitting on the curb. He realizes that fatherhood is hard, and Kelly tells him that he doesn't need to be a dad, just because she's a mom. She points out that Eric still has a lot of opportunities available to him, but Eric insists that he's not looking to get out of the relationship. Kelly tells him to not settle down with her, just to be a nice guy. Kelly has to tend to Ryan, but she tells Eric, "You know where we live".
Eric returns home where Cory and Alan are arguing about use of the family car. Eric stands up for Alan and tells Cory to go to his room; a command Alan reiterates. Eric then reveals his decision to retake the SAT.
