  • Pedigree, Schmedigree is no doubt the first season's best episode.

    9.8
If you're looking for the best episode of the first season, this would be it: 'Pedigree, Schmedigree'! 'The Howler Bunny' is also worthwhile, but it obviously doesn't compare. That's not a bad thing; just a hard act to follow.

'Pedigree, Schmedigree'--Whiskers tries to rebuild Brandy's self-esteem after her adoption certificate says she is not a purebred Harrington, but a common mutt.

In my honest opinion, and as stated before, this is a superb episode. It does an excellent job capturing Brandy's agony when she learns, before a Miss Amazon pagaent, that she is adopted into the Harrington family. She goes from a shoe-in to being sad about learning this fact; and thinks now she belongs in the Amazon. Whiskers also proves likable in his attempts to reenergize her spirits. We learn that both Brandy and Whiskers are their respective families' 'black sheep'.

The humor also is quite an asset as well, I loved Brandy's half-hearted responses to Whiskers' cheery good mornings. Brandy acting like a dog is very funny as well.

The message of this episode appeared to be 'It's not what you're born with, but what you do with it'. Another strong message in the series.

I consider this episode to be the main part of the two. And yes, I would highly reccommend this wonderful episode.

'The Howler Bunny'--After getting kicked out of the treehouse by Brandy, Whiskers moves in with a pair of howler monkeys.

Well...it's not as great as it's predecessor, but good.

We start with Brandy wanting the treehouse clean. I know that Brandy really doesn't...work. This was an element that we knew wasn't going to be consistant in the series.

Whiskers moves in with a pair of howler monkeys, and he soon proceeds to be a bigger pain than they are or thought. The two 'parents', I felt, served their purpose in this episode and they couldn't even handle Whiskers. I loved Whiskers' reference to both Disney's "Lilo and Stitch" and "The Lion King".

I also enjoyed Brandy learning that Whiskers is a better roommate than she thought; the ever-bickering Cheryl and Meryl and the 'neat-freak' anteater helped establish this.

I like the moral; 'Care for people about who they are, not by their actions'. A message in tolerance is good in my book.

I can guarantee that fans of Brandy and Mr. Whiskers will not regret watching 'Pedigree, Schmedigree'. 'The Howler Bunny' is also worthwhile, but it is obviously inferior. However, it was funny and lively enough to be reccommendable, so I can't complain. On the other hand, I believe 'Pedigree, Schmedigree' will offer so many of the series' positive qualities in that it is easily one of the absolute best episodes. You won't regret spending your time with these two fabulous 'Pedigree, Schmedigree' and the silly

    'The Howler Bunny' episodes.

'Stop it! I hate that leg-twitchy thing!'

    --C'mon, Brandy, you're only canine, 'Pedigree, Schmedigree'moreless
  • Ohana and all that, or is it Hukana Mutata?

    10
I've seen this so many times that its quite insane for me to babble on about they're premises. Thought I'll give a brief summary, of course.

Pedigrre Shmedigree is about Brandy going up against Gaspars lovely girl friend, but finds out she isn't exactly a perfect harrington, so to speak.

The Howler Bunny is the icing, though. I love Fred Willard here, and I enjoy seeing that Brandy actually saves Whiskers and Brandy saves her!

OVerall great episodes for the beginning of 2005 at the time. If you haven't seen these episodes yet, and you say your the die hard Brandy and Mr. Whiskers fan, you aren't until you see this!moreless

Whiskers: Oh, this is fun Mom and Dad! What are we playing now?
Male Howler: Its a little game called throw the past into the waterfall!
Whiskers: Hmm! I never heard of that game.
Female Howler: Were sorry Whiskers but you are just too obnoxious, even for us howler monkeys!

    • (To Cheryl and Meryl, about her former roommate)
Brandy: And then I told her to leave. You know, Whiskers was a slob, but at least he knew how to have fun.

    • Brandy: Well, at least I got my snob back.
      Mr. Whiskers: Yeah.
(Mr. Whiskers jumps on Brandy's back and begins to pet her head)
Mr. Whiskers: Who's a good doggy?
Brandy: (laughing as her leg begins to twitch) Hey, stop it! I hate that whole leg twitchy thing!

    • Brandy: (to Mr. Whiskers) I'm Brandy the mutt! Face it Whiskers, I wasn't born to greatness; I was born to scratch fleas and drink from the toilet!

    • Mr. Whiskers: Good morning, merry sunshine!
(Brandy turns around, ignoring Mr. Whiskers)
Mr. Whiskers: I was going to sit here and let you stew in your own juices, but then I remembered, Palm Beach!
      Brandy: (half-hearted) Woof.
Mr. Whiskers: Brandy, I know you can win this thing. I know you can!
      Brandy: (half-hearted) Arf.
Mr. Whiskers: Don't you at least want to see it?
      Brandy: (half-hearted) Bark.
Mr. Whiskers: All right. We'll do it your way. Walkies! Brandy want walkies?

    • Brandy: Palm Beach...
Mr. Whiskers: Why does Palm Beach look so much like the Amazon?
      Brandy: This is the Amazon!
Gaspar Le Gecko: Palm Beach Amazon, A tropical paradise in the middle of a tropical paradise. Enjoy.

  • NOTES (1)

    • This episode was up for "First Disney Channel Episode Of 2005" in Disney Channel's New Year's Eve House Party (2005). The show lost to Phil of the Future and Lilo & Stitch: The Series.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Whiskers: Ohana, and all that. Or, was it hakuna matata?

"Ohana" is the Hawaiian word for family. Family means, "Nobody gets left behind or forgotten". This reference came from Lilo & Stitch: The Series. "Hakuna Matata" means no worries. This reference comes from The Lion King.
