Maverick's reluctance to sell his ranch, the Lazy Ace, becomes a major stumbling block to the railroad coming into Sweetwater. He suspects the supposed "railroad representatives" may not be all they claim to be.

Continuity: When Jack announces the stranger at the end of the episode, Tom and Bret are standing close together and Bret unclasps his hands and stands up rather than lean on the bar. Tom moves his arms out from his side. In the next overhead shot, Bret is leaning against the bar and clasping his hands, while Tom has his hands on his hips and is a bit further away from Bret. In the next closer shot, Bret and Tom are standing together much closer and Bret isn't leaning on the bar.
It's mentioned that Bret Maverick's old "Pappy" lived to be 93 years old.
Pappyism: Importance comes in two sizes: yours and mine.
Bret: You got a hammer?
Cy: Sure you know which end to use?
Bret: Sure is quiet here.
Cy: Would be if you stopped poppin' your knuckles.
Bret: Playin' cards without guns is like tryin' to shuffle without thumbs.
Bret: (to Guthrie) Your sense of fair play could cost us a fortune.
Mary Lou: I think I've really misjudged you.
Bret: You've all really misjudged me if you think I'm gonna fold my hand.
Bret: Do you own a dress?
Mary Lou: Nobody reads stories written by people in dresses.
Bret: Yeah, I never had any trouble sleeping. Ever since you gave Crow that money back, I keep tossing and turning all night.
Tom: But look at all the friends you made.
Bret: You can't spend friends.
Bret: Trust me.
Guthrie: I know better than that. My old pappy never said anything smart in his life.
Crow: Mr. Maverick has a point, although I am not exactly sure which end of the sword it's on.
Bret: Well, I hate to tell 'em "I told you so," but I think I will anyway just 'cause it'll feel so good.
