According to Evelyn Waugh, the death of Lord Marchmain was based on the real-life death of his Oxford friend Hubert Duggan, a stepson of Lord Curzon. Duggan had led a life of dissipation, and despite his family's opposition Waugh had taken a Roman Catholic priest to give him the last rites.
