After her father's death, when he appeared to return to the Roman Catholic faith, Julia arrives at a personal crisis which forces her to give up her irreligious relationship with Charles. The Strike collapses in ten days. With Lady Marchmain now at death's door, Julia asks Charles to travel to North Africa to try to bring Sebastian home.     Charles comes home from Paris. He accepts an invitation to Brideshead for Christmas and the New Year of 1925 when he hears that Sebastian (and Samgrass) will be there too. He finds Sebastian even more depressed than he was before he went away, and the rest of the family are trying to stop him from drinking by locking all alcohol away and by keeping him penniless. Charles incurs their anger by giving Sebastian money, which results in a very drunken evening at a pub and some terrible behaviour. After Charles admits he was the source of the money, Lady Marchmain's hard words give him the impression that he will never be welcome at Brideshead again.moreless

    Sebastian has clearly become an alcoholic, and his drinking, his depression about the state of his family and his bad behaviour are becoming more and more of a problem. His relationships are falling apart, and then he is sent down (expelled) from Oxford. After an unhappy Easter at Brideshead, Sebastian departs for a tour of the monasteries of the Near East, with Samgrass as a tutor, leaving Charles dismayed. Charles decides that he, too, will finish with the University, pursuing a career as a painter. His father agrees to this, on the condition that he also goes overseas, so Charles enrols in an art school in Paris. There, he loses contact with Sebastian, but he still hears from Lady Marchmain, who wants him as an ally against Sebastian's decline.moreless

One night, after Boy Mulcaster persuades Sebastian and Charles to go with him to London for a ball and then a night club in Soho, Sebastian crashes his car and is arrested, charged with drunk driving. Julia's boyfriend Rex Mottram persuades the court that there are mitigating circumstances, and Samgrass covers Sebastian's back at Oxford. There he meets Sebastian Flyte (a young man with a teddy bear) when Sebastian, rolling drunk, vomits through Charles's window and sends him flowers to apologize. Charles becomes part of Sebastian's set, which includes the aesthete Anthony Blanche and the more traditional 'Boy' Mulcaster.
