HOORAY FOR TIME DIFFERENCES NEWS

... Cheerio, indeed! One of geek television's biggest mysteries will be unveiled this Sunday when the BBC announces who will play Doctor Who's twelfth doctor. The reveal will happen live at 7pm England o'clock on BBC One during the Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor special. But America will also get the announcement live, courtesy of BBC America, which for us New Worlders means 2pm on the Least Coast and 11am on the Best Coast. Place your bets on who it will be, I've got money on Rowan "Mr. Bean" Atkinson. [BBC America via press release]

BUSINESS TIME

... Let's keep it British with news from Fox that it will be adapting the U.K. drama Broadchurch. The idea is to make a "long-form event series," and let me just stop right there to say DAMMIT NETWORKS JUST CALL THEM MINISERIES! You aren't fooling anyone! Argh! Anyway, Broadchurch follows the investigation of the death of a young boy by some detective-types. Fox is eying the 2014-2015 season for its debut. What are the chances Fox f*cks it up? 90 percent? 95 percent? The original version premieres on BBC America next week. [Fox via press release]

... Fox is guessing that Glee will end in two years, which is about three years too late. Ha! Anyway, the show has already been renewed for those two years, but if some breakout stars come along Fox would consider extending it. [TV Line]

... More Glee news: Network president Kevin Reilly says that Glee will address the absence of Finn Hudson, who was played by late actor Cory Monteith, in the third episode of the season. There have been lots of questions surrounding how Fox would handle Monteith's death, and if you want to know how his character will be written off the show, click the link. [Variety]

... ABC is developing Travelers, from Life of Pi screenwriter David Magee. The science-fiction series follows a family who discovers that doors in their grandfather's estate are portals to other times, trapping them in the house and sending them all over the place, space, and time. [Deadline Hollywood]

... WEtv has renewed Marriage Boot Camp: Bridezillas for a second season of 10 episodes to air in 2014. In the show, lady Godzillas join the Army or something? [WEtv via press release]

... Bravo has renewed Million Dollar Listing NY, or as I call it, Every New York Listing, for a third season. The reality show follows real estate agents in New York. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Fox has another miniseries coming up in 24: Live Another Day, and Chloe will be back for it. The network announced today that Mary Lynn Rajskub will reprise her role as systems analyst Chloe O'Brian in the sendoff for the action thriller. Look for it in 2014. [Fox via press release]

... Jennifer Lopez is thiiiiiis close to returning to American Idol as a judge. And Keith Urban is even closer, because he's definitely returning. [People / Fox via press release]

... 90210's Trevor Donovan will guest-star on Lifetime's Drop Dead Diva, in case you're Trevor Donovan's mom and are wondering what he's up to. He'll play a really, really, really bad best man. [THR]

JUICY GOSSIP ABOUT CELEBS MISBEHAVING

Chloe is the real star of 24.
If she wasn't there Jack would last about an hour.

He got by just fine in seasons 1 and 2... and she was just annoying in 3.

"West Coast is Best Coast" - nicely done. Only now I can't help but think of that "North Korea is Best Korea" meme. I bet the new Doctor will be *some random choice that Americans don't know*. What's that, I already win all the money in the pool? Yay!

Ha ha, Fox won't air Broadchurch as-is, you can't get me to make book on those odds, it's 100% and you know it.

I'm convinced that something went down that we don't know about with this whole Dr. Who thing. It was less than a month before Matt Smith announced his departure that this very site, tv.com, ran articles about Smith and Coleman would both be returning for at least a full season. On top of that, they just went to a lot of trouble to screen a new companion with Smith, something that's not done lightly from what I understand. Why not keep Amy/Rory and change everybody over at once, if it was planned. So now she suddenly gets just a few eps with him, suddenly the contracts and news about staying on vanished, and coupled with some British websites I troll revealing that the show's funding has been screwed with quite a bit by the BBC in the last couple of years......it all adds up to something fishy, and nobody can convince me otherwise. And so for my favorite doctor leaving--whether planned or not--can I just say........GODDAMMIT SO MUCH!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah....a commenter below noted something I left out. The other Doctors since the reboot have been announced well in advance. Starting with Tennant being cast first but Eccleston agreeing to 1 season as a favor to Russell Davies. Matt Smith was revealed more than a year in advance of his time on the show. It's just one more oddity that makes me think this happened abruptly, for some unknown reason.

That's kind of the impression I got as well. I'm not really sure how I feel about it.

In what universe is Chloe considered a fan favorite? She is LITERALLY the worst tv character (and possibly actress) ever to grace a TV screen.

It would be nice if people on the Internet knew what the word "literally" meant. Or do you think the world revolves around you?

Why would I possibly watch FOX's Broadchurch when the real thing airs next week? If you want to air the thing so badly, buy the rights to air the real thing. However much money the BBC stands to make from airing it on BBC America is probably much less than what FOX would pony up to air it. Americans won't explode if they hear British accents.

Americans don't all watch cable, and there's gold to be mined from advertising to eyeballs. Fox doesn't know what original ideas are, so they take whatever they can find and hope for the best.

Look forward to this & have set Tivo. "Crime Traveller" is a good but lesser-known Brit scifi time travel show, a review can be found by Googling "Crime Traveller classictvdvdreviews"

Then what were seasons 1 and 2? (Seeing as she wasn't in them.)

That was when 24 was actually more realistic, and Jack Bauer dealt with feeling tired.

Travelers sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to check that out.
Reply

meh I'll just read it online later or something lol

only 95%? you're being generous. there's a 100% change they'll screw it up, just like ABC with The Syndicate aka "Lucky 7"

Glee should end this season, Rachel and Finn were the best thing they had going for the show still, and now that's done with.. only decent thing Glee could do is spin off the NYC storyline into it's own show because McKinley High is the worst part of the show now. none of these new kids hold a candle to the originals, and the remaining ones will graduate this season.

The Travelers sounds interesting, but it kind of reminds me of The Magician's Nephew.

First thing I thought of when reading The Travelers bit was the comic series Locke and Key. I have not read that, but that too does involve doors in an old mansion that have some effect on the residents, if I am not mistaken? The main difference is one being sci-fi and the other is horror.

I thought that too!! Yea Locke and Key is amazing, I wish they would finally greenlight it for television!! Stupid Fox! .... I would want it preferably on HBO, AMC, or FX. I bet Ryan Murphy could do pretty good with that.. And I don't mean Glee Ryan Murphy, I mean American Horror Story Ryan Murphy... yes, to me they are two different people. Not that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, wouldn't do great with it :)

I don't hate him; but I think he'd be as awful as Rory Kinnear (the other touted would be - until he announced (loudly) at a red carpet thing he would NEVER play doctor who for fear of being typecast). I'm only surprised it hasn't been leaked yet - it was with Tennant and Smith.

Why remake Broadchurch? You are not going to do better than what was already done. It was great.

Oh and the chances of Fox screwing it up? 99%

I think you're selling Fox short. I'd give 'em a solid 100%.

110% if it made mathematical sense. But hey, it wouldn't surprise me if network TV's ability to screw things up defied the laws of math.

I was trying to give them the benefit of a doubt. I mean they did have Fringe, and they did have 24. They might, one day, trip and fall over something good.

Rowan Atkinson has already been the dr (ok it was a comic relief special)
Still would be fun if they chose him tho :D

Hahahaha......yes...Doctor Who and The Curse of the Fatal Death. A youtube classic. Hugh Grant and some others as well. Interestingly, that was written by Stephen Moffat, waaaaay before the show was ever talked about being brought back and obviously before Moffat ever knew he would be the showrunner.

didn't know about moffat writing that.. cool fact

What?! No news on the Supposed Buffy Kickstarter?! I just read this:

Sarah Michelle Gellar weighed in, saying a "Buffy" movie could be a possibility, but only if the right story came along. "My joke is, at this point, the stake would be my walker and I would be hobbling in," Gellar, 36, joked with E! News during a recent interview.

"Joss [Whedon, who created 'Buffy'] and I always talk about [a movie]," she continued. "But the thing with 'Buffy' is that <'Buffy' was a movie, and it ultimately didn't work as a film. And we had such miles to overcome when we were trying to do a TV show based on a movie. And one of the reasons, I think, is that the story works better over time ... If there was ever the right story to tell, we would certainly do it. But I think there is also a great fear in that, and rightfully so"

"It's kind of wonderful," Gellar told The Huffington Post in May, looking back on the show in honor of its finale's 10th anniversary. "I'm incredibly proud of that show -- proud of everybody on it, of what we did ... You can't be prouder of that show. It still holds up in reruns and I'm blessed every day ... I've been pretty lucky."

Things like that don't bother me. If they made a movie, I'd be all for it! And last time I checked joss and Sarah are still friends and talk. But who knows...

That interview has been circulating since the beginning of the week actually. But I wouldn't include it here, because in all honesty, it won't happen. Even raising the money that the VM kickstarter did wouldn't be enough to ensure a good movie. There's a lot more that goes into the CGI and costuming/monster making that increases the budget significantly. And when you look at how things have expanded with the storylines that the season 8 and 9 comic books, it just becomes an even bigger budget project.

I would absolutely love a Buffy movie, but I think it's past it's time. It's more than just having the right story at this point. With 10 years passing, it's harder to buy James and David as immortal vampires. And James has also said in the past that he wouldn't want to do it for that very reason. And I wouldn't want to see those roles recast but I can't see a movie without one or both of them, as important as they have always been to the story.

I guess, bottom line, I would rather just have my memories of the shows as they were than risk having them tarnished by a less-than-stellar movie. And I think a lot of people feel the same way.

i love love buffy, right from the start, but is this a joke?i thougt she didt want to do anything related to buffy anymore.

She now...fugde that would be GREAT
if they could make buffy with the buffy we know
some what years later damn i would give up sex for that!!!!!!!!!

imagine buffy in HD all the new special effects they can do now days
imagine buffy will be far way more better then any vampire tv show for now and comming decade.

but i dont have high hope for it
:(
anthony david james all worried that they are become to old for this, well let me say it for all the fans YOU ARE NEVER TO OLD FOR THIS,besides they can come up with a story that angel spike afther the battle became human for..some time, and just like there always a catch they turned back, but now a little older lokking
not that big of problem!

I thought there was a bit of a falling out between Joss Whedon and SMG towards the end of the shows run? Something about Joss not wanting to work with her again because she'd turned into a total diva.
The extras on the DVD's had stuff about the shows wrap party where they were interviewing everybody and SMG was noticable by her absence.
Reply
Flag
Yeah but then SMG's career fell over and now she can't really get back on the top anymore - so she's probably less diva(ish); besides she's older now, married with a kid and so (hopefully) wiser.

I still wish they'd cast Ben Whishaw, but he took himself out of the running. My money is on a relative unknown. Or Alan Rickman, because obviously.

Oh I was *praying* Ben Whishaw would do it, but when he said no I was gutted - he would've been brilliant and so understated compared to Smith (although I did like Smith's rendition, a quieter more introspective doctor would be nice now).

Really? I found it quite funny. Rowan Atkinson would have been a very good Doctor post-Blackadder, I think.

I've just never found him particularly funny; the only Blackadder I thought was good was the first world war one because it was so close to how the heirarchy treated the common soldier - not funny, just very satirical and so well done (to me anyway).

I'm not chuffed at the prospect of Peter Capaldi being the doctor either; he's okay in 'in the loop' but he's not great generally and he's not the best actor around, especially for such an iconic role.

I really hope they've gone for someone who's a better, someone who can really get into the role. So far they've had doctors who were excellent - each one very different to the last, but also with that same under-lying steel core; so if they miss-step it now with the new one they could destroy it very easily.
