The investigation gets under way as DI Hardy and DS Miller try to locate the murder scene and to identify the principal suspects. The Latimers struggle to cope. The Herald's Karen White is determined to make this a national story.
Fingerprints found at the murder scene incriminate Danny's own father, whose alibi for the night of the murder is soon broken. Steve Connolly claims to have a message from Danny to his mother.
The Latimers attempt to use the national press to help find their son's killer. Journalist Olly Stevens discovers that newsagent Jack Marshall has a previous conviction. DI Hardy suffers a blackout.
Hardy and Ellie come under fire over progress made in the case. Miller notices an inconsistency in the evidence handed over by Jack Marshall, while an article in the Herald suggests that he is a sex offender.
With no new leads or witnesses, DI Hardy is told to scale back the investigation. However, when the town gathers to mourn Jack Marshall's death, his attention turns to Rev Coates. Maggie Radcliffe is determined to uncover Susan Wright's secret.
DI Hardy is hospitalised, and his health becomes a concern. DS Miller interrogates Susan Wright, who reveals her connection to Nige Cater and implicates him in Danny's death. Rev Coates approaches Hardy with what may prove vital evidence.
DI Hardy and DS Miller finally identify Danny Latimer's killer, and the circumstances leading to his death. His family, and the wider community, struggle to come to terms with the revelations.
