Although Jackie Robinson was indeed traded to the Giants, he never played for them; indeed, he retired. In the following year, the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles (and the rival Giants moved to San Fransisco), breaking the hearts of Brooklyn fans everywhere.
In this episode, everyone is heartbroken that Jackie Robinson is traded to the Giants, and could not have even beleived that there could be even worse news --- the Dodgers moving to Los Angeles --- which will happen next year. But because "Brooklyn Bridge" was eventually cancelled, we never get to see how how the characters deal with the end of an era in Brooklyn, or how the Dodgers' absence changes everyone's lives on the show.
The episode title is a play on the line "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" in the Simon & Garfunkel song "Mrs. Robinson"; DiMaggio was a famous baseball player of the same era.
