Dad Pepelo: Encouragement and praise equals good? Beating kids until they lose consciousness equals bad? Fascinating!
Vale: When Sione's mum kicks us out we stay at Jeff's place. Right Jeff? Jeff da Maori: Well you're welcome to stay, but my parents hate Islanders!
Mrs Tapili: Don't listen to him, Your Honour! Those children would be better off being raised by grass! Dad Pepelo: Objection, Your Honour. SHE'S A SLUT!
Mrs Tapili: (to Dad Pepelo) What are you, drunk? Dad: The word is 'pissed', you elephant ass.
Sione (To Pepelo): You're a useless Dad! (Dad Pepelo stares in shock)
God: (outside Jesus' room) Jesus, I said I'm sorry! It was two thousand years ago! Let it go! Jesus: NO! (sings "Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World") Go away, dad! You're not the boss of me! God: I'M THE BOSS OF EVERYTHING!
Valea: First of all, I'm not a Maori! And second of all, I'M NOT A MAORI!
This is the final episode of the first series.
Ka Mate Haka:
When the boys are taken away by the Constable, Jeff performs the Ka Mate Haka, one of the best known Hakas because it is regularly performed by the All Blacks before rugby matches. The dance and chant originated in the Ngati Toa Tribe of New Zealand's North Island. The words chanted are:
Ka mate, ka mate! ka ora! ka ora!
Ka mate! ka mate! ka ora! ka ora!
Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru
Nena nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te ra,
A, upane! ka upane!
A, upane, ka upane, whiti te ra!
This translates as:
I may die! I may die! I may live! I may live!
I may die! I may die! I may live! I may live!
This the hairy man that stands here,
Who brought the sun and caused it to shine-
A step upward, another step upward!
A step upward, another... the Sun shines!
Vale: (writing to Valea from the childrens' home) I hope to see my brother again and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific Ocean is as blue as in my dreams. I hope.
This is as paraphrase from the movie The Shawshank Redemption.
Dad Pepelo: (rubbing his hands and hissing) Oh yes, my precious... Dad Pepelo is taking on the aspect of the evil Gollum of the Lord of the Rings series of books, later made into blockbuster movies in New Zealand.
Dad Pepelo: Rage, crack your cheeks, blow! Dad Pepelo is quoting from the Shakespeare tragedy King Lear.
Officer Bababiba: Hasta la bamba, baby!
The good officer is mixing his references there, referring to the movie Terminator II, and the Richie Valens song "La Bamba".
