      • Valea: (when they discover the secret room) Like In My Father's Den! Valea is referring to the critically acclaimed NZ movie In My Father's Den.

      • Valea: (to Temuera Morrison) You're not in Hollywood now, Dr Ropata! This is a reference to the first episode of NZ longest running soap opera Shortland Street, in which Tem's character was introduced with the infamous line, "You're not in Guatemala now, Dr Ropata." Morrison has since gone on to having a solid international movie career, perhaps best known for his role of Jango Fett and the Imperial Clone army in the Star Wars movies.

      • Temuera Morrison appears on the boy's tv presenting a show called "Scary Maori Stories". This is a take-off on Tem's actual show Mataku, which is the Maori word for "fear".
