| omg this is weird. i was just at marbecks today wondering which dvd set to get, angel season 3 or buffy season 5! i've seen the buffy season 5 episodes multiple times on video tapes etc but angel only the once when they first aired over here...so a friend i was with said i should get angel season 3 as it's less fresh in my mind...so i did. looking forward to watching it too, after i get through season 2 |
Buffy season five is much better than Angel season three (in my opinion). Buffy season five had an awesome story arc, a nice villain and some very great filler episodes.
I did like Angel season three, but I did dislike a lot of it too. I thought Holtz, Justine and teen Connor were annoying. And I really didn't like the last four or five episodes of the season.
Buffy's 5th Season by far, had a lot of great episodes and the overall arc was strong even epic at times.
While Angel's 3rd season gets ton of praise and is a good season overall, I always found it to be the weakest of Angel, yeah there were great episodes butmost fans forget there some really bad filler episodes thrown in.
I liked season three a bit more because it took really serious issues into place like that episode Earshot.
Plus the finale ws great.
And it had Angel, Cordelia, Oz, Joyce and many other faces we have not seen in season 5.
On a scale of 1 to 10.
I give season 3 8 and a half points.
And season 5 7 points.
I would have given season 5 6 points but an extra point for Tara being there.

Gotta pick Angel season 3.
Bad-I really dislike Spuffy so the beginnings of that setting in in S5 wasn't something I liked. His creepy obsession was deeply unflattering to his character
. It was also just extremely horrible to see Spike offer to kill Dru to make Buffy realise he was serious about being in love with her. It was awful that Spike had the Buffybot created for him, despite her being really funny, the humour isn't worth the sheer cringyness of it. I really dislike Dawn as well. Considering how I feel about Willow's habits in S6, looking back on the smattering's of Dark Willow in S5 isn't a good thing. The Riley/Buffy storyline of him doing that to her was bad and he could be really annoying. Pretending to stake Spike to keep his mouth closed was just plain low. Despite liking episodes, often like with episodes Tabula Rasa & Once More with Feeling, though really good and enjoyable still left a Spuffy tint for me on them. For example despite liking the flashbacks in Fool for Love, the Spuffy in it irritates me. People making really stupid decisions.
Good-There were some episodes that were really very good, and several that I really enjoyed. I liked that Buffy wanted to learn more about her slayer heritage and Glory was a fun villain. It was nice to see Harmony. I liked that Spike was actually trying to get the chip out. Personally I'm surprised he didn't try to claw it out of his own head. Disturbing that. The Dracula and Troll episodes were funny. Joyce's storyline was upsetting but very well done. It was nice to see Drusilla and the crossover mentioned.I liked thatBuffy went out of her way to train withGiles. There were some really funny moments and also some really great ones.
Bad-I'd started to get a bit annoyed at Cordy about the middle of Angel S2, but this gradually and I think randomlygot stronger through S3&4. I really don't like Cangel so didn't enjoy that about Angel S3. Cordelia occasionally annoyed me a lot. Justine was annoying. Wesley was rather obsessed with Fred. Same thing with Cangel taking away a little from certain episodes that I liked. Wesley had good intentions but should have spoken to them about it and should have thought it through more, that decision selfless though it was, was clearly going to go wrong for him and everyone.
Good-Flashbacks. Holtz was an interesting and complex character, he was sympathetic while still being quite horrible. I like Gunn/Fred. I really like Darla. The storyline was intense. I actually kind of liked that Angel noticed his whole world didn't implode without Buffy somewhere out there in it. Even if it impacted him, it wasn't the complete end of the world. Lilah is awesome. There were some really funny moments and also some really great ones. It was quite a dark series and could get quite upsetting, with good storytelling and quite moving scenes and stories. Wesley & Cordy's impersonation of Bangel is epic, adding to it is Fred's cluelessness about it, Gunn's amusement and Angel's reaction. Baby Connor is adorable (though I'm not a fan of that overall storyline, it'smoving, surprising and rather interesting at least)and Angel's love of hockey is revealed and he still can't use his phone. For episodes to watch on their own and not for the emotional ongoing plot; I really enjoy That Old Gang of Mine, Carpe Noctem, Birthday, Waiting in the Wings, Couplet &The Price. Though it's not by favourite, it's definitely an interesting season.
Why is this Buffy S5 vs Angel S3? Cronologically S5 was opposite S2.
Without question season five of Buffy.
S5 of Buffy has much richer themes, more interesting character development, and utilizes its minor characters far better. Season 3 of Angel just doesn't do that, and the way it turns Wolfram and Hart into a dithering, pathetic mob of idiots is truly tragic (they were SUCH a great villainous conglomerate with Holland Manners alive), and while I like what happens with Wesley, nothing of particular interest happens as far as Fred and Gunn go, and let's be honest--Cordy's ascension is poorly conceived and written.
Comparatively, S5 of Buffy has a pretty coherent arc, and there are hardly any bad episodes (the weakest to me is maybe Triangle, but even that's pretty funny). I can recall one or two really strong Angel episodes from that season ("Lullabye" and "Sleep Tight"), but could rattle off plenty of stellar Buffy eps--"Fool For Love," "The Body," and "The Gift," just to name a few.
To me, there's really NO comparison--the best season of one series, and arguably the worst of the other.
