    To continue the discussion TV Knight and myself were having in the rewatch thread what do we think of Buffy/Angel fanfiction? It is almost certainly the most popular show ever in that regard.

    I used to read it in reams but don't any more. I think the appeal was that it was so unlimited, we could see what we always wanted to see. Bangelers and Spangelers etc could always get the results they wanted and we could bring characters back from the dead, have crossovers from other shows that could never happen in real life (Xena discovers she's not actually Ares' daughter but her powers come from her being a Slayer)etc. You could have whatever you wanted, the Scoobies appearing on the Jerry Springer Show, Willow having sex with the Cheeseman from Restless, Buffy being killed in Sunnydale only to wake up sane in the asylum from Normal Again. And it can fill in the blanks, what really happened between Buffy and Angel when they meet up in season 6? What happens between Tara and Willow when the candle goes out in New Moon Rising? What is that intimate moment between Angel and himself that Spike refers to?

    My favourites?

    Non-adult;

    Keeping Me Here-Phantom Dennis telling us why he stays on earth due to his love of Cordy. Real tearjerker!

    Adult;

    "Thanks for lending me your body B/Thanks for taking care of my body Faith" a couple of adult fics set during the ep 'Who are you?'. In the first we see Faith in Buffy's body seducing the entire cast, even Adam. In the second we see Buffy having her own sexual adventures in Faith's body before they kiss and make up.

    The answer to all three is "they got naked".

    Same thing I think about any form of narrative in particular printed or cinematic.

    If it's good...

    If it's bad...

    As long as Lady Lancaster writes it, it's brilliant. Then again, she writes heaps and heaps of stuff, so I guess she should have it nailed. Basically, I think good fan fictions depends on the author and how well they know the characters, plus how successfully they can invent new ones.

    Willow and Tara sure, Buffy and Angel certainly not as he might have lost his soul. Spike and Angel? Hmmmmmm, I often wonder is it actually the body transference moment in Just Rewards

    Angel doesn't lose his soul just from getting naked, silly.

    Eh, no, it's obviously something else in their past.

    Fan fiction sucks. 'Nuff said. It's not official. It's usually pornographic. But, hey however ya get your kicks I guess. But Angel screwing Spike and Buffy sleeping with the entire cast/everything that moves/everyone becoming prostitutes ain't my cup of tea.

    I wrote a couple of fanfics myself--but about previous Slayers, like in the "Slayer Diaries." I dare not attempt trying to write a story involving the main BtVS characters because I know it'll suffer in comparison. For instance I wrote one about a Slayer in ancient Sumeria named Ninkasi (I got the name Ninkasi from the Sumerian goddess of booze by the way), which revolved around a vampire trying to work up a spell to get "living bones" so he could ressurect himself after getting killed--and of course I wanted an explanation of why The Master had bones in "Prophecy Girl" and "When She was Bad." Joss didn't provide one--so I made one up myself! (Of course I had to set the story in ancient Sumeria because Giles said the original spell was written in Sumerian) I don't get this crossover stuff though--why combine BtVS with another show when it stands so well on its own and is better than most other shows? It seems so nonsensical to me. Buffy exists in its own universe and that should be that.

    Horses for courses, if you don't want any sexual content check out fanfiction.net which has no 18 rated fic. Some writers actually write an adult and non-adult version of the same story

    Horses for courses? I usually use "crap in a hat" but, cool. I have nothing against sexual content, I'm just cranky and bitter. Maybe I shall check out this fan fiction of which you speak, the last fan fiction I read had Darth Vader pop out Leia's eyeball and f- I'm actually not gonna finish that sentence.

    Thanks, BB, that's a really sweet thing to say! On to the topic, the quality of Fan Fiction, whether it's Buffy, Angel, Gossip Girl or whatever, depends on several things, mainly, that the person in question knows how to actually write, that they know what the initial writer/creator meant for the characters and also, that they do NOT have ANY Mary-Sue or Gary-Stu characters because there is NOTHING worse, in my opinion. It's also really important to write about stuff that you have properly researched if you want others to enjoy it. Realistic original characters is a must, also. I've just finished my 247th fan fiction (Dollhouse) so been doing it a while. It's fun and fills in some time.

    About those sexually graphic BtVS fanfics--I think I know the inspiration for those. I read that spider story JoxerLives commented on, where in an alternate version of "Selfless" Buffy and Xander are captured by that giant spider & Buffy is impregnated with spider eggs which after hatching will bite and kill her. Luckily Buffy manages to strangle the spider in its own webbing then uses its fangs to cut her & Xander free. Buffy then asks Willow to get rid of the baby spider but not to kill them as she has developed "maternal feeling" for them so Willow sends them by magic to the "land of the spiders." That seems out of character for Buffy--and for a woman in general--most women would wish spiders into a giant can of "Raid." I was wondering where the author got this sick idea, but then I remembered a "Nova" special on PBS about spiders. The nurse spider after it lays its eggs turns its digestive juices in on itself so her young can eat her after they hatch. Conversely there is such a thing as a "tarantula hawk"--really a wasp, that stings a tarntula then lays its eggs in it so the wasp's larva can eat the spider alive from the inside out after they hatch. They say this was the inspiration for those Sigourney Weaver "Alien" films. I saw this tarantula hawk deal on "The Disney Channel" by the way, Disney made a lot of nature documentaries during the 1950's and 60's. And then there's all the other weird stuff on nature docs. The hammerhead orchid in Australia sends out fake female wasp scent to get a male wasp to "mate" with it and thus spread its pollen (tricking a wasp into committin plantuality!). The female praying mantis bites the head off its mate after sex (the inspiration for "Teacher's Pet") Great White sharks have twin pseudo-uteri (female) and grapplers (male) and mate swimming side by side. The GW sharks young develope in the pseudo-uterus but if the mother doesn't get enough food to poduce eggs for the unborn sharks to eat then they will eat their siblings right in the womb before they have a chance to be born. Of course whales are built like other mammals with everything centrally located so they have to mate side by side swimming upside down. And then there was that National Geographic special on cats. Tomcats have barbed members--the barbs piercing the vaginal wall prompt the female cat to ovulate. Like most mammals the act of mating itself prompts ovulation--menstruation is an extremely rare reproduction strategy (Women shouldn't complain about "the curse" imo instead they should thank heaven they are not a cat). And then there's the seahorse, where the female transfers her fertilized eggs to the male. The male seahorse carries the eggs in a brood pouch until they hatch then gives birth live to them, even suffering labor pains (Ok maybe women can complain about not being born a seahorse). So that's where I think these sex crazed fanficers get their warped ideas from--all those nature shows on PBS and the Discovery Channel! (But remember--it's "educational")

    In fairness to the fanfic writers remember in Expecting Cordy is knocked up by a demon and does develop maternal feelings for her brood. Think Rosemary's Baby?

    Brett Khar did a whole article on the darker aspects of fic. He pointed out that both men and women wrote rapefic for different reasons, guys want to dominate, girl want to be dominated AND vice versa, girls want to dominate and guys want to be dominated. He theorises that GOT fic is all about the authors mothers (very Freud) the authors see themselves as the monsters because they feel unattractive. The female characters are always incredibly voluptuous and feminine and will inevitably fall in love with their rapists and offspring as a mother develops maternal instincts for her children. The whole idea of Vore-fic is again to dominate and that they wish to consume them entirely (he points out that although women always get consumed in such fics they actually NEVER die).

    I think that's why I like the Googlecaptain's fic, whatever bad stuff people do to the characters in fic he/she always rescues them in a sequal. That said they're no prude, loves writing Buffy/Dawn/Joyce sex, I figure a sentimental pervert? (unfortunately their link is dead so I've never been able to talk to the cap)

    The joy of the internet is that it is truly anonymous so people can post their fantasies without any restrictions whatsoever. Of course this also means that it explores the darker reaches of the soul and goes some VERY weird places. Another point made about fanfic is that it's not necessary to set the scene or even describe the characters, everyone already knows

    Just realized I may have given sexually warped fanficers ideas with my above post. I hope nobody does a fanfic of Dawn doing it with a giant seahorse. I don't like the idea of Dawn getting some male pregnant.

    I think after the maternity ward scene in Aliens vs Predator; Requiem you really can't knock the fanfic writers. And it got a 15 rating?
