Episode Recap

The episode starts in Xander's apartment. Xander, Buffy, Dawn and Spike walk in. Xander hated the idea that he has to share house with Spike. After Buffy reminds him, Xander invites Spike in hesitantly. He asked Buffy why Spike's problem had to become his problem, and Buffy said that Spike had a soul now – he's changed. Dawn asks Buffy is she's still in love with him, but she denies almost immediately. Spike says that the whole plan isn't working, and he decides to leave and tells Buffy that he does not need her cuddling. Buffy leaves after she said that it's not cuddling.

At the school's field, Dawn asks Buffy why Buffy is helping Spike if it's not about pity. She says that she feels for him. Dawn does not understand why these kinds of relationship must be like this. Buffy leaves, leaving Dawn to talk to herself. She was interrupted when she sees the football's quarterback pulling on his jacket. Dawn is in deep crush with him, and does not notice herself sliding off the bench and drop to the ground with a scream.

Anya's place is trashed after a demon attacks her. Buffy heard her screams and comes to her rescue. Anya says that she needs help, but does not want to need help. She then asked Buffy to leave, but Buffy said that something bad is happening, and she does not want her friends to be in danger.

At school, Dawn is practicing how to speak to R.J., the quarterback. She comes up to him while he's chatting with he's other friends and two cheerleaders. One of them has a broken leg and tells them that she could still cheer by using a chair. The other cheerleader, also R.J.'s girlfriend, tells her that they could find a replacement for her at the tryouts. The group leaves Dawn stammering to herself.

Later that night, Dawn decides to try out for the cheerleading, and finds Buffy's old cheerleading shirt.

The next day, Dawn attends the cheerleading tryouts, but her cheering for R.J. is bad, and R.J. looks around embarrassingly.

Buffy tries to calm Dawn down that night, but she says that her whole life is ruined and R.J. does not want to see her again. Buffy notices her shredded cheerleading outfit and asks Dawn what she had done. Dawn cries as she tells her the day's events. Then, she tells Buffy she does not need advice from a dysfunction queen and asks her to leave.

The next day at school, Dawn overheard R.J. and his friend talking. His friend had been chosen by the coach to be the quarterback, much to R.J.'s disappointment. The friend leaves, and Dawn follows him. At the stairs, Dawn tells him that it's not fair for R.J. because he is the best guy in the team. The friend tells her that it's not for her to decide. Her anger pushes to the limit and she calmly pushes him down the stairs. Realizing what she had done, Dawn tries to play it cool when she is called to the principal's office. She lied to him and said that "good thing R.J. can take the place to become the quarterback" which makes Buffy really suspicious.

That evening, R.J. faces Dawn about the incident. She tells him it's no big deal because she's being "framed" but R.J. thinks otherwise. R.J. tries to calm her down by asking her out to the Bronze that night.

Incidentally, Buffy, Xander and Willow are at the Bronze too. Buffy notices Dawn dancing with R.J. and pulls her to the side. But Dawn angrily tells her that it's her life and she went back to the dance floor. Later that night, R.J.'s "girlfriend", the head cheerleader attacks Dawn. Buffy stops them just in time before they kill each other. The girlfriend kicks Buffy and runs away, telling Dawn to stay away from R.J.

The next day, Buffy confronts R.J. to what he's doing with Dawn. When he slips on his jacket, Buffy suddenly goes crush-y and stammers. She lets him go after realizing that she begins to fall for him.

Buffy later tells Dawn that she confronted R.J. that evening and told her that she shouldn't have come up on him too quickly. Thinking that Buffy's intentions are good, Dawn embraces her, not knowing everything Buffy said was a lie.

At school the next day, Buffy tells R.J. that's being called by the principal, when what she really wants is to "make out" with him in an empty room. Buffy seduces him and they started making out, just as Dawn looks into the room and sees them.

That night, Dawn and Buffy argues about whom R.J. likes the most as Willow, Anya and Xander tries to work out things. Xander and Spike goes to his brother's house and talks to him. They learn that the jacket that was given to R.J. by his brother was cursed so that every woman who sees it will fall for it. Knowing their problem, they get back to Buffy's house, but not quick enough to stop Willow and Anya from seeing R.J. in his jacket and they too fall for him.

The girls fight about R.J. and they all try to prove their love. They all left the house, leaving Dawn to cry for herself.

To prove that she loves R.J. the most, Willow casts a spell to call on Hecate. Xander stops her before saying the last word. Xander argues with Willow and tells her that R.J. is a guy, and since Willow is gay it's all too impossible for her to love him. Willow lets slip that Buffy is going to kill Principal Woods, and they all leave to save him. They stop Buffy just in time before she bazooka-es the principal into pieces. Willow locates Dawn, who is lying down in front of a train, trying to kill herself. The Scoobies arrive just in time to save Dawn before she's being trisected to death. Buffy tells her that no man is worth her live, but Dawn argues and tells her what she herself is willing to do.

The pieces all fit and the problem is solved when Xander and Spike steal the jacket from R.J. and the spell is broken. They all group up that night at Buffy's house, where the jacket is burned. Buffy tries to calm Dawn down and she can't believe that she almost committed suicide all because of a spell. Willow asks Anya what she's done, and she tells them that she wrote an epic poem for him, when she had actually robbed a bank.

Screen turns black and end credits roll.
